ArenaNet Planning Open Beta for Guild Wars 2

Nevermet Press has an interview with ArenaNet's Angel Leigh McCoy, where it's revealed that Guild Wars 2's open beta is in the planning stages.

[NMP] So, how about work today? You are a full-time designer for ArenaNet, how did you find yourself working on Guild Wars 2? (AndÖ when is the game going to be released? [wink wink]

I do work full time, and Iíve been here for four wondrous years as of today. Before ArenaNet, I was working at Microsoft Game Studios (MGS) as a project manager. Iíd interviewed at ArenaNet a couple times, been wined and dined by their previous writing lead, and had met the owners, but it wasnít the right time. I had several friends at ArenaNet already, and I was a huge Guild Wars fan, but I just wasnít ready to leave MGS. Finally, at the end of 2007, Bobby Stein, the new writing lead, approached me about applying again. So, I did.

Bobby likes to remind me often about how I blew off the first interview, and he had to call me and ask if I was coming. Iíd had a total brain fart and lost track of time. Despite that, and despite the fact that I admitted to disliking Tolkien in the group interview with James Phinney, Jeff Grubb, and Ree Soesbee, I was hired. And I was ready. To my delight, the timing was perfect. I moved right into working on Guild Wars 2, and Iíve been crazy happy ever since.

That last question is the big one, eh? And, I cannot answer it because I donít know the answer. What I can tell you is that weíre currently in Closed Beta and planning has begun for an Open Beta. Itís all extremely exciting, and the game is coming along smashingly. It really is like magic when it all starts coming together and you see what an enormous accomplishment youíve contributed to.

Game of the year, easy. I've been working on my GW1 account in anticipation. Their free Guild Wars Beyond content is still going strong, with the third part of Winds of Change due to hit soon. So far I have one character with God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals, and 36/50 for the Hall of Monuments. By the time open beta hits, I should be at least 45/50, if not 50/50. Rumor is, more rewards are to be announced for their Hall of Monuments calculator (right now, rewards are only shown up to 30/50).

Cool, waiting on this one.
Choose your government: the majority ruling the minority, the minority ruling the majority, or everyone ruling themselves long as they do not initiate force, fraud, or theft against one another.

Closed beta already? Nice, I didn't think they were there already. Looking forward to trying the Open Beta.

As I played a sh1t ton of GW, I'm really looking forward to the open beta.

Do you think they will put the release off till 3rd quarter of this year in order to cash in on holiday sales? It would suck, but I understand the thought process behind it.
