Joss Whedon Exits 'Batgirl' Movie
Feb 22, 2018 - 5:48 PM - by Emabulator

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Joss Whedon is leaving the Batgirl movie project after not being able to figure out how to make a Batgirl movie.

Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer among other pop culture touchstones, is exiting the Warner Bros. feature project, which he was writing and was slated to direct.

"Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn't have a story," Whedon told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. Referring to DC president Geoff Johns and Warner Bros. Picture Group president Toby Emmerich, Whedon added, "I'm grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for 'failed?'"

Whedon came on to Batgirl almost a year ago, in March 2017, with the hopes of bringing to the big screen a companion to the female empowerment icon Wonder Woman, with this one tied to the most popular character in comics, Batman. Batgirl is Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon.

But sources say that Whedon, after a year of trying, could not crack the code of what a Batgirl movie should be. Wonder Woman, meanwhile, became a cultural phenomenon as well as one of the biggest hits and most acclaimed movies of 2017.

Industry sources add that even as Whedon faced story issues, in today's cultural entertainment environment, a male filmmaker may have faced greater public scrutiny if he were to have tackled a movie with such feminist importance such as Batgirl or Wonder Woman, much like a white filmmaker would have seen backlash taking on the Black Panther movie.

Past Cure Launch Trailer - PS4, Xbox One & PC
Feb 22, 2018 - 10:21 AM - by Evil Avatar

Launch Trailer Emerges for Past Cure, Available for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Phantom 8 Studio, a Berlin-based indie developer, is delighted to deliver the launch trailer for Past Cure, an intense cinematic, story-driven experience set to launch worldwide for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and on Steam for Windows PC on February 23rd, 2018.

Winner of multiple awards – including Best Storytelling at White Nights, Public Choice Award at Game Connection 2017, nominated for best emotional game in the Emotional Game awards, and for Best Indie Game at GamesCom 2017 – PAST CURE sees you play as Ian, a former special operations soldier unsure of his surroundings, and desperate to make sense of the last few years.

After the victim of experimentation and torture in prison, Ian’s mind has become fractured. His captors left him scarred with unrelenting nightmares, visions and new unstable and largely unexplainable powers such as time manipulation and telekinesis. Drifting between reality and hallucinogenic states, Ian must make sense of the world around him as he sets out on a path of revenge and discovery, uncertain of what awaits around the next corner.

“We’ve been delighted with the positive response to Past Cure from gamers around the world, and we’re excited to finally see people playing what has been our passion to create for the last two years,” said Simon Gerdesmann, Phantom 8’s Managing Director. “To achieve what we have as a small, eight-person first-time development studio makes us immensely proud. And, we’re not finished yet; there’s more to come from the Past Cure universe, as we’ll announce soon.”

Key Past Cure Game Play Features

• A Story Driven Supernatural Thriller - Past Cure is a cinematic, story driven experience where the player follows the struggle of a broken man searching for the missing pieces of his mind. With intense cutscenes and intriguing story items throughout the levels, the players can unravel a story that will keep them guessing until the end.

• Action vs. Stealth - Be bold and engage your enemies with time bending gun battles and brutal jaw crunching combos. Or pick the stealthy approach where evasion tactics and slick stealth takedowns allow you to outsmart your enemies in silence. Choose the right approach to each situation as there are pros and cons to each playing style.

• Mind Bending Abilities - Unleash the unlocked power of Ian’s mind against those who unlocked it. To truly master the Past Cure experience, players must utilise time manipulation and astral projection to gain an edge on opponents and overcome obstacles.

• Dreams vs. Reality - Ian’s mind is torn between the gritty real world and the nightmarish horror of his dreams. Past Cure contrasts between the cold, brutal combat orientated levels of the real world, to the more puzzle solving and survival gameplay in the abstract dream worlds.

Developed by an eight-person studio, Past Cure is Phantom 8’s debut game. It launches globally at digital and retail, echoing modern film making in its cinematic design, and redefining the quality that can be achieved with a small, but focused studio.

Past Cure releases worldwide on February 23rd, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC for £24.99/$29.99/€29.99.

LEGO Movie Director In Talks For Dungeon & Dragons Film Reboot
Feb 21, 2018 - 9:01 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot rolled a Dungeon & Dragons film news.

In December it was revealed that a new big-screen adaptation of the classic role-playing game property Dungeons & Dragons was in development. It has now been reported that Paramount is looking to bring The Lego Movie's Chris McKay on board as director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, McKay is in negotiations with the studio to helm the film. McKay was the animation director on the hugely successful The Lego Movie, and was a producer on last year's Lego Ninjago Movie. He is also developing a Nightwing movie at DC.

The Dungeons & Dragons reboot currently has a release date of July 23, 2021. Baby Driver lead Ansel Elgort has reportedly been in talks to star, but beyond that, no further news is known about the project. An earlier Dungeons & Dragons movie was released in 2001, but it was a commercial failure and poorly received by critics.

XCOM 2 Is Now Xbox One X Enhanced
Feb 21, 2018 - 6:49 AM - by BeardedSonOfNel

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen received a free update for Xbox One owners today that makes several changes to the game and also fixes a variety of bugs. Of particular interest is the fact that this update has now made XCOM 2 an Xbox One X Enhanced title which means that it will run and look better when played on Microsoft’s new Xbox One X console.

It’s important to note that this update didn’t make XCOM 2 a 4K title however it has received a graphical boost to 1440 resolution which makes it better than the usual 1080p but slightly less than 4K which is 2160.

Call Of Duty: WWII Studio Heads Leave Sledgehammer Games, Stay With Activision
Feb 20, 2018 - 5:10 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the news from the front.

The two heads of Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind the incredibly successful Call of Duty: WWII, are stepping away from the studio they founded to work on other games with parent company Activision.

Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield founded Sledgehammer in 2009 after leaving Visceral Games and creating the first Dead Space. The pair joined Activision as one of the three studios participating in the company's Call of Duty three year cycle, helping to co-develop Modern Warfare 3 with Infinity Ward, make Advanced Warfare themselves, and create Call of Duty: WWII last year.

The two are leaving just after WWII became the best selling game of 2017 despite having only released in the last part of the year. Aaron Halon, the senior development director at Sledgehammer, will be promoted to head the studio following their departure.

Condrey and Schofield are not leaving Activision as a whole, merely stepping away from Sledgehammer to work on other projects.

"Activision has offered me the opportunity to focus my energy on something I’m very passionate about," Schofeld wrote, "exploring new game ideas for the company. It’s something I just couldn’t pass up."

Condrey echoed a similar sentiment in a statement. "On a personal level, I’m deeply grateful to the men and women who have poured their passion into the pursuit of excellence with us. I’m proud of what we accomplished together, it has been the greatest experience of my professional life. I am looking forward to starting a new chapter of my career with Activision. I couldn’t be more excited for the future of Sledgehammer Games and look forward to seeing Aaron lead the studio to new heights."

New PUBG Map Is Coming Before July
Feb 20, 2018 - 1:29 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has word that the next PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds map is scheduled to be released before July.

Although it isn't confirming specifics just yet, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds developer PUBG Corp. has talked a little about what's to come in the months ahead for the popular battle royale game. Among other things, a new map is in the works that should be out before July.

As part of its latest development updated shared on Steam, PUBG Corp. explained that it had to delay "development of some of the major features and systems" in order to deal with the game's serious cheating issue. PUBG Corp. also said that because of "other reasons," it wasn't able to share PUBG's roadmap for 2018 as specific timing was changed. It now plans to share details on what's headed to game on PC from now through June as part of an announcement in March--including specifics regarding the next map.

"We do have a lot of exciting things that we want to share with you, including new content to provide more extensive battle royale experiences as well as improvements and modifications to create a deeper and more realistic gameplay," it said. "In March, the team will reveal what you can expect from us in the first half of 2018 in terms of our development and new content plans which, by the way, include a new map. "

Burnout Paradise Remastered Launching March 16th!
Feb 20, 2018 - 10:11 AM - by Evil Avatar

Burnout Paradise Remastered is Coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 16th March

Criterion Games, a studio of Electronic Arts, today announced Burnout Paradise Remastered will become available 16th March, 2018 on the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, inviting players to wreak havoc and unleash automotive anarchy once more. Players will be transported back into the world of Paradise City to tear it up in the ultimate driving playground, from hectic downtown avenues to the wild mountain roads. Pull off high-octane stunts and create insane car destruction in one of the greatest arcade-driving games ever created.

Burnout Paradise Remastered includes the original base game and the eight add-on game packs released during the Year of Paradise, including the extension to the drivable world with Big Surf Island. Burnout Paradise Remastered also features a range of technical enhancements for greater visual fidelity, including high resolution textures for players to explore Paradise City in 4K with supporting 60FPS on the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.

“When people think of Criterion Games, they often remember the Burnout franchise and for good reason. What we created 10 years ago, we feel is still fun and unique to this day in the gaming industry,” said Matt Webster, General Manager at Criterion Games. “Burnout Paradise is an arcade racer built to provide players the thrill of racing with their friends, in a free form way that was both seamless and immersive, but also a little crazy with all the different stunts and crashes players could pull off. With the release of this remaster, we’re able to share this action-packed ride with a whole new generation of players.”

Burnout Paradise Remastered is rated PEGI 7 and is available digitally and in stores for £34.99 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will be available later this year on Origin for PC, bringing the Big Surf Island add-on to PC players for the very first time. EA Access members will also get to play Burnout Paradise Remastered before its worldwide launch, starting on 9th March, 2018 via the Play First Trial.

Chris Evans Seems to Confirm Black Widow Movie
Feb 19, 2018 - 3:06 PM - by Emabulator

IGN has the secret info, that was not obtained from a secret dossier, put together by a British spy.

Captain America himself, Chris Evans has appeared to confirm the long-rumoured Black Widow standalone movie.

Speaking to ET Canada about the success of Black Panther, Evans said:

"There's nothing they can't do, man. And I'm sure it's going to have the exact same effect when Captain Marvel comes out, and then the Black Widow movie comes out. Marvel just has the winning recipe."

With Marvel currently releasing three films a year, and with both 2018 and 2019 already fully scheduled, it seems likely that a Black Widow movie would hit a 2020 release date.

Last month, we heard reports that the movie was in the very early stages of development, and had attached a scriptwriter.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance Developer Compromising On Controversial Save System
Feb 19, 2018 - 2:39 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the news from the kingdom.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance has been fairly successful, but definitely has a controversial save system that the developers are changing, but just a little bit.

In our guide to surviving Kingdom Come: Deliverance, we go over the way the save system currently works.
You need to learn how to deal with Kingdom Come's quirky save system. You can only save when you're resting in bed or by using Savior Schnapps, a craftable/purchasable drink that also makes you drunk. The Schnapps are a pain to come by early on, so your best bet is to remember your sleeping spots (whether they're inns or the mill you start out with) and fast travel to them when you need to save. You want to do this often. Very often. That might sound like a pain, but it sure does beat losing multiple hours of progress to a gang of bandits in the woods or, worse, a stupid bug.
The lack of a quick save has frustrated some players, which has the developers hoping to meet them halfway.

In the upcoming 1.3 patch, developers Warhorse will introduce a "Save and Exit" feature, which saves the game on command but quits out isn't quite what players want, but it allows players to avoid losing progress for terrible reasons. The new save system will come with tweaks to lock picking and pickpocketing, but this bundle of fixes is currently scheduled for an indeterminate time in the future.

The developers have promoted Kingdom Come: Deliverance as a title that strictly adheres to realism and history to explain design choices, which is why drinking saves your progress and the game is introducing a magic respec potion in the same future patch.

There's a Tomb Raider Barbie Doll
Feb 19, 2018 - 2:03 PM - by Emabulator

Ken you believe it. Eurogamer has the earth shattering news.

Barbie has been an astronaut, a vet, even a mermaid. Now, she's a Tomb Raider.

Doll maker Mattel has unveiled Tomb Raider Barbie (thanks, IGN), which is less a new look for Barbie herself and more just an action figure of Alicia Vikander, who portrays Lara Croft in next month's film.

(There are a range of Barbie dolls which aren't actually Barbie herself, something which I've just found out browsing Barbie.com.)

Along with the doll you also get a map, a journal and a tiny pickaxe - perfect for plunging into the head of any nearby Ken who talks about this Lara being someone you want to protect.
Editor: I got a call from Evil Avatar, who is not currently in the EvAv Dungeon performing medical experiments on social justice warriors, and he says that the Tomb Raider Barbie is definitely not an action figure.

Report: Transformers Movie Series To Be Completely Rebooted
Feb 19, 2018 - 1:12 PM - by Emabulator

Autobots, transform and roll out! GameSpot has the story.

Although the Transformers franchise has proven to be a hugely poplar one, 2017's The Last Knight was the least successful film by some distance, suggesting that audience interest in the series might be fading. The spin-off Bumblebee is due out later this year, but a new report states that beyond that, Paramount is planning to reboot the whole series.

As reported by Transformer World, toy manufacturers Hasbro confirmed at the company's Toy Fair 2018 Investor Preview that the series will be entirely reset. In addition, a new agreement with Paramount means that Hasbro will have greater control over the property, including greenlighting movie projects. The site also reports that no Transformers movies beyond Bumblebee remain on Paramount's release schedule.

This is something of a change in fortune for the series. In October 2015, Hasbro announced that there would be at last four more movies, and that a "writers room" had been established to map out the next decade of Transformers across movies, TV, and digital. Following this, Paramount confirmed that Transformers 6 would arrive in 2019, which seems to be no longer the case.

The Last Knight made $605 million worldwide. This was well below the $1.104 billion haul for its predecessor, 2014's The Age of Extinction, and less than the first movie made back in 2007.

Remedy's Upcoming Third-Person Action Game, Codenamed P7, Coming in 2019
Feb 18, 2018 - 2:14 PM - by Emabulator

Remedy Entertainment's P7 is being published by 505 Games for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. PC Gamer has the story.

Alan Wake and Max Payne developer Remedy Entertainment's mysterious upcoming third-person action game, codenamed P7, will release in 2019, the company has announced. We don't know much about P7 yet, other than it's a "cinematic third person action game" set in a "new Remedy-created universe" that will offer a "long-lasting experience". So, yeah, it could be anything.

In its financial statement for 2017 published this week, Remedy said the game—which will be published by Payday 2 publisher 505 Games—has "progressed according to our plans", leaving pre-production last year.

Remedy also plans to launch a third, unannounced project during 2018, the financial statement revealed. Again, we don't know much, other than they'll be hiring new staff for the game, but it's still interesting. As well as P7 and this new project, Remedy is still developing the story mode for upcoming FPS Crossfire 2.

A 2019 release date means that we should find out more about P7 at some point this year, and I wouldn't be surprised if Remedy keeps its cards close to its chest until one of the big conventions. What would you like to see from P7?

System Shock Remastered Put on Hold
Feb 18, 2018 - 11:14 AM - by Evil Avatar

Sometimes You Need to Take a Step Back in Order to Take Two Steps Forward

In March of 2016, Nightdive Studios released our video of our vision of System Shock Remastered. Done in Unity it was an immediate hit with almost a half million views on YouTube. In June of 2016 we launched a Kickstarter campaign to make the vision into a reality. It was tremendously successful with over 21,000 backers contributing over $1.3 million to the campaign. We put together a development team and began working on the game. But along the way something happened.

Maybe we were too successful. Maybe we lost our focus. The vision began to change. We moved from a Remaster to a completely new game. We shifted engines from Unity to Unreal, a choice that we don’t regret and one that has worked out for us. With the switch we began envisioning doing more, but straying from the core concepts of the original title.

As our concept grew and as our team changed, so did the scope of what we were doing and with that the budget for the game. As the budget grew, we began a long series of conversations with potential publishing partners. The more that we worked on the game, the more that we wanted to do, and the further we got from the original concepts that made System Shock so great.

Ultimately the responsibility for the decisions rests with me. As the CEO and founder of Nightdive Studios, a company that was built on the restoration of the System Shock franchise, I let things get out of control. I can tell you that I did it for all the right reasons, that I was totally committed to making a great game, but it has become clear to me that we took the wrong path, that we turned our backs on the very people who made this possible, our Kickstarter backers.

I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision. We are taking a break, but NOT ending the project. Please accept my personal assurance that we will be back and stronger than ever. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled.

Eugen Systems Employees on Strike
Feb 17, 2018 - 5:38 PM - by Emabulator

GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that almost half of French strategy game maker Eugen Systems' (R.U.S.E., Wargame, Act of Aggression, Steel Division: Normandy 44) developers have walked out claiming labor law violations.

A group of developers at French strategy specialist Eugen Systems has gone on strike. The studio behind Steel Division: Normandy 44 and the Wargame franchise has confirmed that 21 of its 44 employees walked out yesterday afternoon.

According to a post by the striking employees on the website of Le Syndicat des Travailleurs et Travailleuses du Jeu Vidéo, the strike comes after more than a year of problems with management. In particular, the developers allege that Eugen has run afoul of minimum wage laws, neglected to compensate developers for overtime, and refused to recognize contractual obligations with some employees.

Eugen posted a response on its website, saying it respects minimum wage laws and made corrections to payslips on occasions when it was necessary. It did acknowledge an issue with its recent payslips going out late, but attributed the delay to complications caused by recent legislative reforms. It also rejected the suggestion that Eugen employed a crunch culture, saying it once asked three employees to work a Saturday in 2010 to ensure a title's smooth launch, but hasn't done so again.

The strike began a day after Eugen released Back to Hell, the latest expansion of its World War II real-time strategy game Steel Division: Normandy 44.

Civilization VI's New "Flirtatious" and "Curmudgeon" Agendas are Melting Snowflakes
Feb 16, 2018 - 1:17 PM - by Emabulator

Fans of Civilization VI have had a mixed reaction to the new "Flirtatious" and "Curmudgeon" Agendas in the game's Rise and Fall expansion pack. Eurogamer has the story.

The issue centres around Firaxis' addition of more Hidden Agendas for its various leaders, and a couple of those new Agendas in particular: "Flirtatious" and "Curmudgeon". The former means a leader will like other civilizations that have leaders of the opposite sex, and dislike those of the same sex. The latter the opposite: disliking the opposite sex and liking those the same as their own.

If you're not familiar, Agendas are basically the goals, or playstyles, that are given to for each AI-controlled civilization's leader in a game. They come in two forms: fixed agendas that generally suit that leader's overall theme, like Queen Victoria's desire for imperialistic expansion with "Sun Never Sets"; and Hidden Agendas, which are randomly assigned and a bit more light-hearted about adding personality - maybe a leader is "Fun Loving" and wants to keep their citizens well entertained, or "Nuke Happy" and won't hesitate to pelt you with a few ICBMs when the mood takes them. These new ones fall under the latter.

Many fans see these new traits as a bit of fun - and, more importantly, historically accurate fun, given how much the romantic whims of leaders have already shaped the world - but others have noted a couple of problems.

The first complaint, which is frankly a little curmudgeonly itself, is concerned with how it impacts gameplay. In-game, Hidden Agendas also affect that leader's opinion of you, which could in turn affect alliances, trading, and even warfare. Normally you can play around them - if you find out someone is Nuke Happy, for example, then you know they'll like it if you build nuclear weapons yourself, and so you can curry favour by doing so, and so on.

But with Flirtatious and Curmudgeon, you can't. If you're playing as Queen Seondeok of Korea and Alexander the Great is a Curmudgeon, he'll start out disliking you no matter what (and being disliked by Alexander normally means being conquered by him, so it really doesn't help).

The second issue is more significant - Flirtatious leaders only ever hold favourable opinions towards the opposite sex. In other words, they're always straight, and given the fluidity of certain leaders' sexuality in the real world - Alexander the Great himself purportedly had same-sex relationships - that seems like an oversight.

Firaxis has a reputation for holding a more progressive, inclusive view on history, even noting that there was a conscious effort to include some of the more overlooked women and civilizations of history in the Rise and Fall expansion - and so it seemed surprising that they'd miss the mark here.

Connect your old Xbox to the HDMI port on your television without the use of any adapters or power supplies, just plug and play. Important to know that it doesn't upscale, but simply converts the component signal to HDMI. I test it with a bunch of games including some that run at 480P, 480i, 720P and 1080i. This is my review with gameplay footage.

The ESA Responds To Hawaii's Proposed Legislation On Loot Boxes
Feb 16, 2018 - 9:59 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Earlier this week, Hawaii proposed legislation that would liken loot box implementation in video games to gambling in terms of the level of "psychological, addictive, and financial risks."

The bills are led by representative Chris Lee, who in November announced an investigation into EA's use of loot boxes in games like Star Wars: Battlefront II. The first pair of bills aims to prevent the sale of games that randomize digital rewards to consumers under the age of 21, while the second pair of bills would require that publishers disclose probability rates of obtaining certain items. This legislation has the potential to greatly affect games across the industry, ranging from free-to-play titles all the way up to full-retail juggernauts like Overwatch, Destiny 2, and Star Wars: Battlefront II.

The Entertainment Software Association responded to this proposed legislation through a statement provided to GameIndustry.biz. In the response, the ESA spokesperson affirmed its commitment to industry self-regulation.

"As an industry, we take our responsibility to consumers very seriously and continually work to create greater awareness and transparency about the wide range of in-game experiences," the spokesperson told the outlet. "We strongly believe that the industry's robust, self-regulatory efforts remain the most effective way to address these important issues, and that system has a proven and long record of doing so. Some consumers and parents may have questions about how loot boxes work, and ESA has demonstrated a commitment to providing information to guide consumers, especially parents, in their purchase decisions."

Today, another Hawaii state representative Sean Quinlan came out in support of Lee's proposed bills, saying that this legislation differs from past attempts to regulate violence in video games in that it wouldn't affect the content in games, only a specific mechanism by which content is delivered. "If even mature and intelligent adults are falling victim to these mechanisms, how are kids expected to respond?" Quinlan told GameIndustry.biz.

Mafia III Developer Hangar 13 Hit With Layoffs
Feb 15, 2018 - 4:37 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Hangar 13, the studio responsible for 2016's Mafia III, has been hit with a wave of layoffs. Publisher 2K confirmed the news with GameSpot, though the exact scope of the "staff reductions" is unclear at this point.

"2K can confirm that there have been staff reductions at Hangar 13 in order to ensure that the studio's resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans," a 2K spokesperson said in a statement. "These reductions will not influence 2K's ability to create and deliver its products that are currently in development. We never take these matters lightly, and are working with the affected employees to support them and explore potential opportunities throughout our organization."

The news was originally reported by Kotaku; sources speaking with the site indicated that a "large portion" of the studio's staff have been laid off. At least prior to Mafia III's release, Hangar 13's staff count was in the neighborhood of 150 people.

Today Koei Tecmo released a new trailer for the upcoming anime-inspired action game Attack on Titan 2.

The trailer is basically an extensive overview of the game, showcasing its story, characters, and many features, including single player, online multiplayer, and local multiplayer for the PS Vita and Nintendo Switch versions. It’s worth mentioning that the port for Sony’s portable isn’t coming that the port for Sony’s portable isn’t coming to the west, so the Switch is the only console getting local multiplayer around here.

The Evil Within 2 Gets First-Person Mode, Now Available for All
Feb 15, 2018 - 11:51 AM - by Evil Avatar

The Evil Within 2 – First-Person Mode Now Available

Right after The Evil Within 2 launched, inquisitive fans discovered something: a first-person mode that was limited to a specific part of the game’s story could be (with some finagling) extended to other areas of the game. The community began clamoring for this feature to be officially extended to the rest of the game, and the development team at Tango Gameworks has listened. The entirety of The Evil Within 2 can now be played in first-person on PS4, Xbox One and PC in a free update.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out The Evil Within 2 and want to try it out before you buy it, you can download the Free Trial and play through the opening chapters of the game. All save data will carry over if you choose to upgrade to the full game. The new first-person mode is also available to try out in the Free Trial. As an added bonus, should you decide you want the full game, you can take advantage of the digital sale and get the game for 50% off. The sale kicks off today and will run through February 19 on Steam and February 20 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

If you already have The Evil Within 2, changing to first-person is as simple as flipping a switch in the menu. You’ll be able to change this at any point, so you can experience the game however you like.

For more on the new mode, we spoke to Producer Shinsaku Ohara about the process and challenges of bringing a first-person perspective to a third-person game.

What made you decide to get this feature working for the whole game?

We experimented a bit with first-person in the full game, but it was more of an afterthought and a little bit of playing around on our side, since we designed the game in third-person.

Some savvy users figured out a way to activate this mode outside of its intended area, and the reaction to it was pretty positive, so we said, “What the heck. Let’s put it in as a bonus for all platforms.” A lot of players like playing horror games in first-person, so for those who want to see some of the game’s situations through Sebastian’s eyes, it’s a really neat experience.

What kind of development work goes into implementing an entirely new POV into a finished game? Did you run into any unique challenges?

The Evil Within 2 wasn’t designed as a first-person game, so obviously it was pretty difficult. We like to think of it as a “high-level hack” so we don’t want people to compare this with DOOM or anything like that. There were some scenes that just didn’t work, so it jumps back and forth a bit to third-person. But we made sure the game’s an enjoyable experience and hopefully people will enjoy playing in this mode.

Do you have a favorite moment to experience in first-person?

I think exploring Union in first-person makes the scale feel even bigger than it does when you’re in third-person. Also, being able to see our environments and enemies up close allows players to get an even better look at how much effort went into their designs.

The Evil Within 2 is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and has received high praise from critics. As Sebastian Castellanos, you’ll have to dive into hell once more in the sequel to the hit 2014 survival horror game from the mind of Shinji Mikami. Take on twisted creatures in horrifying domains and face off against your own worst nightmares as you race to save your daughter.

It's been nearly a year since it was first reported that Sony Pictures was developing a movie about Spider-Man universe villains Silver Sable and Black Cat. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lindsey Beer (Barbie) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) have collaborated on the latest script for the Silver & Back film. Gina Prince-Bythewood, who is set to direct the movie, is now doing a polish on their draft before turning it into Sony.

THQ Nordic Acquires Metro Exodus, Saints Row Parent Company
Feb 14, 2018 - 10:31 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has word that THQ Nordic has acquired Koch Media.

THQ Nordic has acquired Koch Media, the company that owns Saints Row, Dead Island, and Metro Exodus publisher Deep Silver, bringing back former THQ franchises under the same roof.

In the deal, THQ Nordic gets all of Koch/Deep Silver's titles as well as studios Volition (Saints Row/Agents of Mayhem) and Dambuster Studio (Homefront: The Revolution). Koch also owns a European physical games publisher/distributor and a film distributor/co-producer.

The acquisition completes the circle for former THQ titles. When THQ closed and sold off its properties in 2013, Nordic Games not only picked up almost $5 million in THQ games, but also the trademark (changing its name to THQ Nordic in 2016). At the time, Deep Silver bought other THQ IP such as Saints Row (and its developer Volition) and Metro. Now with the purchase of Koch/Deep Silver, THQ Nordic brings all the old THQ properties back together.

Bayonetta 1 & 2 Nintendo Switch Reviews "nothing short of astonishing"
Feb 14, 2018 - 10:20 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot - 10/10

Bayonetta 2's combat is so expertly constructed, and its presentation so joyously insane, that you'd have to try so very hard to get bored of it all. In a year filled with the promise of ever more elaborate experiences on all the shiny new hardware, that Bayonetta 2--a homage to classic game design and escapism--should be the most fun I've had playing a game all year is unexpected. But maybe it shouldn't have been. After all, its predecessor still stands as one of the finest games of its genre. To have surpassed that with Bayonetta 2, and to have created a game that will be remembered as an absolute classic, is nothing short of astonishing.
CGMagazine - 9/10

While one might find it odd that Nintendo is receiving such praise for filling its library with remasters, Bayonetta & Bayonetta 2 feel right at home on the Nintendo Switch, especially with a third installment headed exclusively for the console. If you’ve never played these games, this is the perfect excuse to finally try them.
Trusted Reviews - 4.5/5

Bayonetta 1 and 2 remain a fantastic duo of action titles that feel perfectly at home on Nintendo Switch. Being able to play two of Platinum Games’ finest efforts whenever you like is hugely appealing, and the abundance of content on offer here only makes it even better.

It’s somewhat disheartening that neither game has received any significant improvements beyond amiibo support and slightly better performance, especially since the Switch has proven it’s capable of far more.

Destiny 2 Crimson Days Launches With New Update On PC, PS4, And Xbox One
Feb 13, 2018 - 11:58 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has word on the latest update and Crimson Days event for Destiny 2.

Destiny 2's first Valentine's Day-themed event is officially live. Following a period of server downtime, Bungie has launched a new update that marks the start of the Crimson Days event on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Among other things, that means there are new rewards to now get your hands on.

As outlined recently, Crimson Days centers around a new 2v2 Crucible mode. You can join up solo or with a friend, but either way, you're strongly encouraged to stay physically close to your partner. Doing so causes your abilities to recharge more quickly than usual, while straying far apart will provide the enemy team with waypoints directing them to your location.

Taking part in the Crimson Days playlist is described as the "best" way to earn rewards, though it isn't the only path. Most of the new items are found in the Crimson Engram, which is guaranteed to not decrypt into any duplicates until you've gotten everything it contains. In addition to earning them through the Crucible mode, you'll receive a Crimson Engram (as well as the usual Illuminated Engram) each time you level up, provided you've hit the level cap. You'll also get one just by logging in and speaking with Tess at The Tower.

February 12 marks his 50th birthday, and in heartwarming fashion, Reynolds has commemorated the occasion with a picture he shared on social media. 2017 Was A Record Breaking Year For Activision Blizzard
Feb 11, 2018 - 4:04 PM - by Emabulator

MCV has word that Activision Blizzard revealed Q4 2017 was its best ever quarter, topping off its best ever year.

The company blitzed past its $1.7bn forecast for Q4 2017, making $2.04bn over the three months. This contributed to the $7.01bn revenue Activision Blizzard enjoyed for the entire fiscal year. An increase of $400m over FY 2016.

"This was a record quarter to cap off a record year for Activision Blizzard," said Bobby Kotick, chief executive officer of Activision Blizzard. "In 2017, our community reached new milestones for engagement, our business delivered record revenues and cash flows, and we made important progress in building future growth opportunities such as the Overwatch League™. We couldn't be more excited for the opportunities ahead in 2018 to continue serving our players and fans."

During the investor call Activision Blizzard also mentioned a “major expansion” to Destiny 2 for later in the year. This is likely separate to the smaller expansions already announced and hopefully of a similar scale to Destiny’s 2015 expansion The Taken King. With sentiment and player numbers for Destiny 2 at an all time low, a large-scale expansion of the size (and quality) of The Taken King has the potential to fix a lot of issues and bring a lot of players back.

Elsewhere in the financial report Activision Blizzard boasts that “Call of Duty: WWII was the top-grossing console game of the year globally, with the franchise's biggest launch quarter sell-through on current-generation consoles. The game set a Sony PlayStation milestone as the biggest day one digital release ever.” Also that “Destiny 2 was the second-highest-grossing console game in North America for the year, had the largest PC launch in Activision history based on units, and had a higher attach rate on its first expansion than Destiny.”

Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition looks beautiful but at what cost?
Feb 10, 2018 - 12:14 PM - by Emabulator

The Digital Foundry put the Windows version of Final Fantasy XV to the test. The results were interesting, and at times controversial.

One of the joys of PC gaming is the ability to tailor the game experience to your own liking, to strike the best balance between visual features and performance - and that leads us on to what's most exciting us about this PC release. Every console version has its own range of compromises and issues and we've yet to experience the definitive Final Fantasy 15 experience. The best of the bunch is Xbox One X, but even this has some minor frame-rate issues, dynamic scaling that affects image quality and a performance mode that gets nowhere near to a locked 60 frames per second. If you want native 4K, or if you'd prefer 60fps (yes we managed it as the video on this page proves - albeit with monster hardware in play) the PC version offers the best route forward.

Professional Bad Guy Mark Strong Promises DC's Shazam! Will Bring the Laughs
Feb 09, 2018 - 1:50 PM - by Emabulator

There will be laughter, of some kind. Shazam! GamesRadar has the story.

Few people do villainy as well as Mark Strong, who you'll instantly recognize from Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Stardust. So it's good to know he'll be giving us full bad guy in DC's Shazam! movie, currently in production. In an interview with Total Film, Strong revealed that this particular DC outing has a lighter side.

"Zachary Levi, who plays the lead [Shazam, the superhero alter ego of Billy Batson], is a very funny guy, and I’ve no doubt he will play with that part and make it interesting," he says. "I think DC have realized that they’ve got their canon of films that are dark, and they’ve now found one that’s pretty funny! There are some really funny moments in it."

Of course, this isn't Strong's first dip in the DC pool. Back in 2001, he starred in Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds, playing the fallen Green Lantern Corps member Sinestro. Sadly, the movie flopped.

"Sinestro was meant to go evil in the second one," explains Strong. "The final frame of the first film is him trying on the yellow ring and his whole costume going yellow, and that was when he went evil. So I was really looking forward to that. The film didn’t do as well as they expected… so it never got made. So I was definitely conscious that Sivana is almost like the next stage that I wasn’t able to take."

Feb 09, 2018 - 1:28 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot is reporting that Capcom has shipped over six million copies of Monster Hunter World in just a few weeks.

Monster Hunter World is notable in a number of ways. It was the first new core Monster Hunter entry to appear on consoles in the better part of a decade and--while still challenging--it's more welcoming of newcomers than previous installments. Through its first two weeks, those decisions have paid off.

Capcom announced last month that Monster Hunter World enjoyed the strongest first three days of any entry in the series, with 5 million units shipped worldwide across PS4 and Xbox One. As of February 9, that figure has now reached 6 million units--something it's done faster than any game in Capcom's history, according to the publisher. Bear in mind, this number accounts for digital sales and the number of units shipped to retailers (but not necessarily sold through to consumers).

The series record came as little surprise, given that the game launched for PS4 and Xbox One, the combined install base of which eclipsed 3DS, which recent entries were exclusive to. World also had the benefit of a simultaneous worldwide launch, thereby bolstering its launch sales figures. Nonetheless, it's clear that interest in the new RPG has been strong.

Weekend Gamer: What are you playing?
Feb 09, 2018 - 7:07 AM - by Jetherik

While the east is going to get hit by snow, in Phoenix it will be hit by sunshine and 70 degrees. I guess the nice weather could affect some game time. What are you playing?

Fortnite Hits 3.4 Million Concurrent Users On Same Weekend Of Server Outages
Feb 08, 2018 - 6:22 PM - by Emabulator

Epic tales of Epic Games' smash hit shooter Fortnite from GameSpot.

Fortnite, the stylized shooter from Gears of War creator Epic Games, has reached a new player milestone. Over the weekend, on Super Bowl Sunday, the game hit a new record of 3.4 million concurrent players, Epic announced in a blog post this week.

By comparison, that's ahead of the 3 million peak concurrent players that PUBG reached in January. The big difference, however, is that Fortnite's concurrent figure almost certainly covers all platforms--PS4, Xbox One, and PC--while PUBG's was for PC alone.

Still, 3.4 million concurrent users is a huge number and it speaks to the ongoing popularity of Epic's game. The developer did not provide a breakdown of how that figure is divided between the paid Fortnite base game and the free-to-play Battle Royale mode, but it can be safely assumed that Battle Royale has the bulk of the players.

Fortnite's newest player milestone is all the more notable when you consider that the game ran into some serious and significant issues recently. In a frank blog post, Epic talked about how the "extreme" server load led to six different incidents on Saturday and Sunday, which in some instances included "total service disruptions" for the game.
