The Nintendo Game Boy Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary Today
Apr 21, 2019 - 9:33 AM - by Emabulator

The Nintendo Game Boy was first released on this day 30 years ago in Japan, then North America three months later, and lastly in Europe, nearly a year after.

The Game Boy launched 30 years ago today in Japan in 1989 and since then, this little pocket-rocket went on to sell well over 100 million units, allowing gamers all over the world the freedom to play their favorite games – including Tetris, Super Mario, and Pokémon. Having this new-found freedom meant that Game Boy owners could play whenever and wherever they wanted which completely revolutionized the video-game era.

The Game Boy combined features from both the NES home system and Game & Watch hardware and went on to create several models that include The Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, and Game Boy Micro. The Game Boy started it all with playing on the go and planted a firm path that made way for the likes of the DS, 3DS, and the Switch that we are lucky to own today.

City of Heroes Back for a Second Print?
Apr 19, 2019 - 11:35 PM - by vallor
Earlier MassivelyOP reported on the existence of a private City of Heroes server which has been running for years despite the game officially being shut down by NCSoft.

Traditionally, anybody bringing that up has been ostracized as a liar. But it’s all come to a head this week as one YouTuber posted a video calling out the secret server and at least one of the people behind it, and now we’ve got a lengthy statement from the private server team’s leader acknowledging some of the claims and resoundingly denying others.

The most recent update mentions not only has the code been released, but a test server is live.

One final note from the PCGamer article which may bring some hope for people hoping to see this become a permanent presence:

I suspect most the outrage is fake merely due to the fact the someone had a toy they weren't sharing but with a dash of legit outrage for the user data being in the hands of these (ahem) villians.

Apparently death threats are required to to communicate the level of displeasure.

Remake of Classic FPS "XIII" Announced for PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC
Apr 18, 2019 - 5:42 PM - by Evil Avatar

XIII’s quest for identity will start again November 13th, 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and Mac

Microïds and PlayMagic unveil today a teaser for the remake of the cult classic XIII, the cel-shading FPS initially released in 2003. Players will be delighted to learn that XIII’s remake will be available the 13th of November 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and Mac!

Based on the first five volumes of the eponymous comic book series, XIII conquered the gamers’ hearts with its unparalleled mix between a story-driven adventure, a solid gameplay and a unique artistic direction.

“We aim to craft the finest adventure for players and XIII is definitely in line with our publishing strategy. Revisiting this game came naturally as we felt this unique kind of story driven FPS experience was missing in today’s gaming landscape. Our goal is to bring XIII’s compelling story to a new generation of players with the best possible graphics and animations.” Declares François Coulon – Head of Production at Microïds

“The PlayMagic team is very excited for the opportunity to remake a true classic; modernizing the graphics, sound and animations while remaining faithful to the original XIII’s incredible look and feel. XIII’s gameplay mechanics are being reworked in an effort to modernize the experience in a way that encompasses the original spirit of the game. We are sure that the fans of the original game will love rediscovering one of their all time favorites while new players discover a truly iconic masterpiece in a new light.” Declares Giuseppe Crugliano, CEO & Creative Director at PlayMagic Ltd.

The Story

Play as «Thirteen», a talented soldier who lost his memory and has been accused of killing the President of the United States. You wake up injured and amnesic on Brighton Beach with the only clue being a small key and a mysterious tattoo « XIII » next to your clavicle. It’s now your job to search for answers in the 34 levels of the solo campaign. Don’t worry, you will find the appropriate weapon arsenal along the way.

More information about this remake will be revealed soon… Stay tuned!
I wrote the strategy guide for this one! Once you got the crossbow, all the other weapons were pointless.

Ubisoft’s giving away Assassin’s Creed Unity and donating €500,000 to Notre-Dame
Apr 17, 2019 - 8:05 PM - by Evil Avatar

Supporting Notre-Dame de Paris

As the smoke clears on the events that unfolded on Monday at the Notre-Dame de Paris, we stand in solidarité with our fellow Parisians and everyone around the world moved by the devastation the fire caused. Notre-Dame is an integral part of Paris, a city to which we are deeply connected. Seeing the monument in peril like this affected us all.

In light of Monday's events, we will be donating €500,000 to help with the restoration and reconstruction of the Cathedral. We encourage all of you who are interested to donate as well. In addition, we want to give everyone the chance to experience the majesty and beauty of Notre-Dame the best way we know how. For one week, we will be giving Assassin's Creed Unity away free on PC, for anyone who wants to enjoy it. You can download it now for Uplay PC here: assassinscreed.com/unity-notredame or get it directly on the Ubisoft Store here: store.ubi.com.

When we created Assassin's Creed Unity, we developed an even closer connection with this incredible city and its landmarks – one of the most notable elements of the game was the extraordinary recreation of Notre-Dame.

Video games can enable us to explore places in ways we never could have otherwise imagined. We hope, with this small gesture, we can provide everyone an opportunity to appreciate our virtual homage to this monumental piece of architecture.

Capcom Home Arcade Mini-Console Includes 16 Games
Apr 17, 2019 - 8:01 PM - by Evil Avatar

Capcom's arcade library is getting a tribute in the form of a mini-console chock full of classic games. The Capcom Home Arcade is a plug-and-play system built into an arcade stick shaped like the Capcom logo, and it comes loaded with coin-op games from the '80s and '90s--particularly the fighters and beat-em-ups Capcom was known for. It's being manufactured by Koch Media with licensing from Capcom.

The lineup listed on the official site includes 1944: The Loop Master, Alien vs Predator, Armored Warriors, Capcom Sports Club, Captain Commando, Cyberbots, Darkstalkers, Eco Warriors, Final Fight, Ghouls and Ghosts, Giga Wing, Mega Man: The Power Battle, ProGear, Street Fighter 2: Hyper Fighting, Strider, and Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo.

The stick measures roughly 22x74x11cm, so it's a sizable piece of hardware. Each of the games are produced from original CPS1 and CPS2 ROMs, and FB Alpha has been tapped to provide the emulation. It also includes wifi so that you can connect to a global leaderboard to upload your scores. The Capcom Home Arcade is coming on October 25, 2019.

A US price hasn't been listed yet, but the Capcom Europe store lists it for 230 euro. That converts to about $260 USD, so you can probably expect it to be in that range. That's about 1,000 quarters, so start saving and checking under couch cushions now.

In a new video released today, Nintendo unveiled that the new playable fighter Joker from Persona 5, the Mementos stage and several Persona series music tracks will be coming to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game for the Nintendo Switch system on April 17 for players who own the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass or purchase Challenger Pack 1. In addition to showcasing Joker in action, the video also highlighted the free Version 3.0 update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate available on April 17, which will introduce a new Stage Builder feature, new video editing features and the Smash World service for the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app

“As the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game of all time and the fastest-selling game ever released in the Super Smash Bros. series, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues to deliver a seismic collision of the biggest cast of iconic video game characters ever assembled in one game,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Through both free content updates and paid DLC, like Joker from Persona 5, we’re able to keep making the game bigger and better with new experiences for Super Smash Bros. players to enjoy for a long time to come.”

After downloading the free Version 3.0 update on April 17, the following features, among others, will also be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:

• Stage Builder: Players with big ideas for a personalized Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stage can let their creativity run wild with the new Stage Builder mode. By using in-game tools, players can add moving platforms, spinning traps and other unique features to their customized stages. By playing in Handheld mode, budding designers can even use the touch screen to freely draw and create, and use front and back layers to further decorate their stages. Designed stages will be available to play in a new tab on the Stage Select screen and can be shared online via the new Smash World service for the Nintendo Switch Online app.

• Video Editor: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate video content that has been saved to a Nintendo Switch system can now be spliced together into a fun timeline presentation. Subtitles and sound effects can also be added to personalize the video, which can be exported and shared with the world through the new Smash World service for the Nintendo Switch Online app.

• Smash World: Players can view shared videos and download stages created in Stage Builder to Super Smash Bros. First PlayStation 5 Details Emerge
Apr 16, 2019 - 6:58 AM - by Evil Avatar

Wired has an article online with a few hints about Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 console, including word that it will be backwards compatible with PS4 titles.

Cerny isn’t ready to chat about services or other features, let alone games and price, and neither is anyone at Sony. Nor will you hear much about the console at E3 in June—for the first time, Sony won’t be holding a keynote at the annual games show. But a few more things come out during the course of our conversation. For example, the next-gen console will still accept physical media; it won’t be a download-only machine. Because it’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console.

Word is also that the SSD inside the PlayStation 5 is faster than any SSD available for PC's and that the system will support 8K graphics.

Ubisoft Apologises for Homophobic Slur Found in ‘Street Art’ of The Division 2
Apr 14, 2019 - 11:24 AM - by Emabulator

Ubisoft has apologised for a homophobic slur found on wall graffiti in The Division 2.

The slur can be found on a huge wall art asset depicting a police officer eating a doughnut. At close inspection – as recorded here in this lengthy Imgur post that shows a series of spelling mistakes in environmental art – you can see the slur written in “leetspeak” on the police officer’s badge.

“It’s been brought to our attention that a piece of street art in Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 contained offensive content. We removed the image from the game via a patch on Thursday, April 11,” Ubisoft said in a statement (thanks, Eurogamer).

“We apologise that this image slipped through our content review processes, and we are currently reviewing them in order to avoid this kind of oversight from occurring in the future.”

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Won't Have Microtransactions Or Multiplayer
Apr 13, 2019 - 9:35 AM - by Emabulator

Respawn boss Vince Zampella has confirmed that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a story-driven, single-player game. There will be no multiplayer to speak of, and no microtransactions either, which means the game will be bucking a few recent trends in favor of delivering players a focused narrative.

On the Star Wars Celebration Day 1 live stream, Zampella said, [Jedi: Fallen Order] is a single-player story game… No multiplayer, no microtransactions. It's a story game." Zampella's words were met with applause and shouts of joy. This echoes Jedi: Fallen Order writer Chris Avellone's earlier comments, when he said story is "very important to Respawn."

"I hope [the six writers] are listed in the reveal because I accidentally said 'I've wrapped this up,' but there are other writers and I'm not even the lead guy," Avellone said. "Story was very important to Respawn. I think they do a good job of introducing various narrative layers into their games already, but they think the story is an important part of what they perceive to be a Star Wars game. That's one of the reasons I like Respawn, because when they tackle something like that, they understand what the important points are."

Disney Will Take A Hiatus On Star Wars Movies After This Year
Apr 12, 2019 - 3:35 PM - by Emabulator

If you're a fan of Star Wars, then you probably have opinions about the frequency of the movies after Disney purchased the property. Starting with The Force Awakens, there has been a Star Wars movie every single year. A lot of people suspected this would continue into the foreseeable future, but Disney president Bob Iger says that Episode IX, now named Rise of the Skywalker, will be the last one for a while.

Speaking to Bloomberg after yesterday's Disney Investor's conference, Iger expressed that the annual structure for Star Wars isn't a long-term strategy.

“We will take a pause, some time, and reset,” Iger said, “because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Star Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.”

Iger has previously expressed regret about the scheduling of Star Wars movies, especially with the short amount of time between 2017's The Last Jedi and early 2018's Solo. He took the blame for setting the movies that way, which is likely why he's pumping the brakes here. Iger did say that there are other movies in development, they're just not coming out soon.

Frostpunk Confirmed for Xbox One and PS4
Apr 12, 2019 - 2:56 PM - by Emabulator

11 bit studios has announced that its popular PC title Frostpunk is heading to Xbox One and PS4 later this year.

Our community asked and we have listened. We are very excited to confirm that Frostpunk, the first of its kind in strategic gaming is officially coming to consoles. A gritty simulation of society survival in a frozen post-apocalypse, the Bafta-nominated Frostpunk was a bestseller of 2018 and multiple award winner in its genre. Frostpunk: Console Edition is a finely tuned adaptation of the PC hit that will be making its way to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year.

Offering players a complex strategic challenge alongside a rich narrative featuring an alternative take on the 19th-century industrial revolution, Frostpunk weaves a story of how our planet mysteriously freezes, putting an end to civilization as we know it and forcing the human race to adapt to the harsh conditions. As the leader of possibly the last civilized society on Earth, you’re going to build the city your survivors live in, discover new technologies, explore frozen wastelands and most importantly, manage and rule society to prepare it for life in an unforgiving world. Whether you’re an enlightened ruler or an iron-fisted tyrant, you’ll discover choices in this world aren’t as easy as they seem, and that holding power over people has a cost as heavy as the responsibility you feel in caring for them.

Focusing on a smooth transition to consoles, great efforts are being taken to re-design the game and adjust its mechanics for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, especially when it comes to controls. 11 bit studios still have some work to do but are close to the finish line, creating an intuitive interface allowing gameplay to feel natural even when playing with a controller. “We don’t want to reveal the exact release date yet, but I can say that the game should be out in the summer,” says lead designer Kuba Stokalski.

Originally sold as a bundle for $189 back in 2007, it drummed up a lot of excitement, especially coming off the success of Nintendo Wii and it’s motion controls a year earlier. In this video we discover parts of it are pretty cool…and others… maybe could have used more work.

God Eater 3 Lands on Nintendo Switch on July 12, 2019

Leading interactive entertainment publisher and developer Bandai Namco Entertainment America today announced that it will be bringing God Eater 3 to the Nintendo Switch on July 12, 2019. Players will be able to team-up with friends on-the-go to topple massive beasts known as Aragami in this fast-paced monster-slaying action game.

Join the elite force known as God Eaters, imbued with the unique ability to wield God Arcs, specialized weapons to take down the nearly indestructible Aragami threat that has ravaged the planet. God Arc weapons can come in a wide variety of melee and ranged type capabilities featuring swords, hammers, sickles, spears, shotguns, sniper rifles, and more. Each weapon also comes with unique transforming functions, extending their utility by providing additional attack options to deal more damage. Players can determine which weapon works best for their playstyle and hone its intricacies when taking on missions in Story Mode or online with other God Eater 3 players.

God Eater 3 incorporates new combat mechanics and customization options to create dynamic fights that change the flow of battles. After devouring an enemy, players can activate Burst Arts which change some of normal attacks into special attacks. Players can also choose between several Burst Arts, as well as the specific effects of the Burst Art, to suit their play style. In addition to Burst Arts, a new Dive ability increases the speed of combat by having players race headlong towards enemies for swift attacks, keeping constant pressure on the opposition.

“The Nintendo Switch opens up new ways to experience God Eater 3,” said Jackie Simmons, brand manager for Bandai Namco Entertainment America. “The portability of the system means players can meet anytime anywhere to band together and bring down monstrous threats. The platform also enables players to take God Eater 3 on the road, so they’re never far from adventure and fun!”

Players can team-up with three other God Eaters either online or through a local connection to tackle story missions together or combine forces with seven other players online to experience Assault Missions, the largest group battles ever seen in the God Eater franchise. Cooperating and fighting as a team will help engage the Battle Support System. By fighting next to teammates, players can unleash this new ability which shares various power-ups to help the entire team overcome tough fights and secure victory.

God Eater 3 for Nintendo Switch will also receive exclusive pre-order items in the form of Yuri and Estelle costumes from Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. Pre-order now at participating retailers.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Poster Leaks on Amazon
Apr 11, 2019 - 2:11 PM - by Emabulator

Ahead of its official reveal this Saturday, it seems a new poster for EA and Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has leaked in a rather strange way.

Over on Amazon today, a new T-shirt containing a teaser poster for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was made available for sale. While it would be easy to write this off as being potentially fake, the shirt itself was available through the official Star Wars Amazon storefront, meaning this is pretty much official. Considering Star Wars Celebration officially kicked off today in Chicago, there’s a chance that the shirt went live on the site by default as the convention began.

It’s worth noting that in the middle of writing this article, the listing for the shirt was promptly removed.

Mark Hamill Pitched a Different Ending for The Force Awakens to JJ Abrams
Apr 11, 2019 - 10:33 AM - by Emabulator

Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker himself, recently described a different ending to Star Wars: The Force Awakens that he pitched to director J.J. Abrams that would have been a touching call-back to A New Hope.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter on the Awards Chatter Podcast for his role in History's Knightfall, their discussion eventually went to Star Wars. During their conversation, Hamill revealed a pitch he gave to Abrams that would have led to the reunion of Luke, Leia, and Han.

“You can still have me come in at the very end,” Hamill explains. “But how about this? Leia’s trying to contact me telepathically. She gets frustrated because there’s no answer so she rushes to the new Death Star…that's three so far...and she almost gets there when she’s stopped by two Stormtroopers. Just before she’s abducted, one Stormtrooper turns to the other and blows him away, pulls off his helmet and says, “Hi sis, I’m here to rescue you.”

Hamill thought that would have "blown the roof of the joint." What's more, this scene would have led to the inevitable death of Han Solo with Luke and Leia there to be with him at the end.

“It's more effective to have people that really have a history with Han Solo witness his death and be unable to stop it. His wife, the mother of his child, his best friend. Instead of two characters that have known him what...20 minutes?"

PlayStation Network online ID Change Feature Launches Today
Apr 10, 2019 - 5:55 PM - by Evil Avatar

Online ID Change on PSN: Your Questions Answered

We’re excited to announce that the online ID change feature on PSN is officially launching to all PlayStation 4 owners later today. You’ll also be able to change your online ID via a web browser, and that feature will also be available starting today. Thanks to all of you who participated in the beta preview program back in October/November and who gave us your feedback!

We do want to take this opportunity to clarify one point – as a result of the preview program, we’ve found an instance where a game did not fully support the feature, even though it was originally published after April 1, 2018, contrary to what we mentioned in our original announcement. All PS4 games originally published on or after April 1, 2018 have been developed to support the online ID change feature. However, since they have not all been specifically tested with the feature, we cannot guarantee that they will support it. For more details and information, we encourage you to refer to the list of tested games before making a change to your online ID. Do keep in mind that the large majority of most actively played PS4 games support the feature.

We’re sure you have questions about this long-awaited feature and how it all works. This FAQ should have the answers you seek, but if not, just leave us a note in the comments below. We’ll do our best to update this document or respond in the comments section.

There’s also a section on our PlayStation support page that may help answer additional questions, which you can check out here.

George R.R. Martin Says Winds Of Winter Writing "Going Very Well Lately"
Apr 10, 2019 - 11:57 AM - by Emabulator

Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series on which HBO's insanely popular Game of Thrones TV show is based, have been waiting for the next book in the series--The Winds of Winter--since the last book, A Dance with Dragons, was published back in 2011. With the show's final season looming, fans await any news about the next book more eagerly than ever.

Luckily, there's some good, if vague, news on that front: Author George R.R. Martin stated during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight that his writing has "been going very well lately."

As the author has stated many times before, he's given up on trying to guess exactly when he'll be done writing, as fans tend to lash out when he provides dates that then come and go without a new release. "It'll be done when it's done," Martin characteristically told ET on the red carpet for the show's Season 8 premiere. Then he added: "It's been going very well lately, so knock wood."

Report: Respawn tackles Apex Legends PC cheaters with hardware ID bans
Apr 07, 2019 - 11:49 AM - by Emabulator

Apex Legends PC cheaters are reporting that developer Respawn has banned them with hardware ID bans.

In threads popping up across ResetEra and Reddit (via PC Gamer), PC players who admit they've cheated are trying to find ways to bypass the ban. Usual workarounds like IP changes are not working, nor will attempts to use secondary accounts, whether or not those accounts have been cheating or not.

"I am HWID banned," wrote Chunk. "Can anyone help and let me know what I can do to bypass this so I can play normal. Everytime I create a new account it gets banned."

Another Redditor shared updates of a streamer who was continually banned on livestream, sending live updates as the cheater went from bragging that "they can't keep [him] out" to giving up entirely and switching to a fishing game. (Sadly, we're unable to watch the video ourselves as the streamer deleted all of their archived videos shortly afterwards).

Ubisoft halts Starlink toy production as franchise sales ‘fell below expectations’
Apr 07, 2019 - 11:22 AM - by Emabulator

MCV has the story.

Ubisoft has confirmed it will longer be manufacturing the physical toys that accompany its toys-to-life franchise, Starlink, after reporting sales for the game “fell below expectations”.

“Thank you so much for the warm response to the new Starlink content announced during the February Nintendo Direct,” the Starlink development team said via a statement on the official website. “With the announcement of new content arriving this April, we felt that it is important to provide an update on the topic of physical toys. Starlink: Battle for Atlas has been a passion project for us from the start, and we are incredibly proud of the modular Starship technology we have developed, and how well players have responded to it.

“Despite the immense and continuous support from our players, the sales for Starlink: Battle for Atlas fell below expectations.” the statement continued. “Consequently, we recently made the decision to not release any additional physical toys for the Spring update and in the future. As part of our effort to do right by our passionate and dedicated community we are currently hard at work on our biggest update to the game so far and are pleased to tell all of you that there will be new digital ships, pilots and weapons to collect.”

The post adds that despite these changes, there “will be a ton of free content” to expand the game with additional missions, challenges and new activities. The update is expected to deploy later this month.
Destructoid's review:

Starlink: Battle for Atlas is a good game that's robbed of greatness by a lack of ambition and terrible toys-to-life implementation. Everything it gets right – the clever mix-and-match shipbuilding, the combat, the controls, the imaginative alien worlds, the decent space opera storyline – can’t escape the vortex of tedium that comes with pedestrian mission design, planets that are mechanically the same, and the crushing knowledge that people who buy just the Starter Pack are getting an unquestionably inferior experience.

Pure Evil - Finished Red Dead Redemption 2
Apr 06, 2019 - 9:49 AM - by Evil Avatar

As part of my Staycation™ I finished up Red Dead Redemption 2's campaign and the two Epilogue sections. There are still a mountain of Trophies that I don't think I'll go back to get.

I got a Congratulations e-mail from PlayStation when I finished the game! Ha!

I charged up one of the controllers on my PS3, I think I might do the last few missions in Red Dead Redemption now, just to be a completest. I think I was right near the very end.
