New Fallout 76 Features Videos

I suspect I will be skipping this title, which will be the first Fallout title I have ever skipped on purchasing. It just seems like they are going down the old Electronic Arts route of "add multiplayer to everything" no matter how bad of an idea that is.

Rune Enters Early Access September 2018

Vikings, rejoice.

Rune will enter Steam Early Access this September. For those of you keeping track, that’s next month. In addition to the brutal new trailer below, you can add the game to your wishlist on Steam today. (Odin favors those who wishlist Rune.)

We’re eager to get more players into the game and continue to build Rune with the community during Early Access. Until then, here’s a message from our fearless leader.

“Rune is a brutal and challenging game set during the Norse apocalypse. We designed it to appeal to fans of the original but also modernized the design for new fans. We hope that all the blood, heart, and soul we put in the game shows as you play and dismember your enemies to take their blood, heart, and soul.” – Chris Rhinehart

Don’t forget that Closed Beta continues this Saturday, August 18. Servers will be live from 12:00 pm CDT to 4:00 pm CDT. Space is available on a first come, first served basis. If you haven’t yet won a key, we’re giving away more on Twitter this week. Plus, we’ll do another drawing before the next playtest. Sign up for the newsletter if you haven’t already.

See you in Midheim this weekend, warriors.

I think I still have like 2 signed copies of the first Rune game in my closet!

Twenty-nine years ago today my brother and I pooled our money together, and went to Shopko to buy the new 16-Bit machine. We hooked it up to the 19'' black and white TV we had in our bedroom. A short while later, our folks bought a new 19'' color TV for the family room in the basement, and we quickly moved the Genesis to that.

Black Ops 4 Beta Game Highlights and Thoughts
Aug 12, 2018 - 11:04 AM - by IGXGamingTV

Played some of the Black Ops 4 beta over the past two weekends and I have to say that I am actually enjoying it. Truth be told, I’m not a fan of Treyarch either and I prefer the Modern Warfare series mainly because of the hit detection is so much better in multiplayer, but ever since the battle royale genre has become main stream, I’m begging for just any good shooter at this point.

Bethesda's Pete Hines will always say "no thank you" to Battle Royale knockoffs
Aug 12, 2018 - 8:27 AM - by Emabulator

GamesRadar+ has the story.

Wondering when Bethesda is going to hop aboard the Battle Royale bandwagon with 100-player Fallout 76 elimination matches, or a version of Skyrim where you airdrop onto an island and start hunting other Dragonborn? It'll likely never happen, according to Pete Hines, SVP of Bethesda's global marketing and communications (who you've no doubt seen during Bethesda's E3 presentations). Speaking with GamesRadar+, Hines explained what he looks for in successful game pitches, and he's none too keen on copying the latest trend.

"If it sounds interesting, if it's something the devs are clearly excited about, and it's something we think is unique and different, that's trying something new or doing something new, that's what gets me excited," says Hines.

"If it's like 'Well, these guys did this, so we're gonna do this,' I can't stay awake. 'Hey, here's our Battle Royale game!' No thank you. Not even remotely interested. That's not who we are as Bethesda; that's not how we've gotten to where we are over the last 30-odd years. And honestly, I think our devs know better than to say 'Oh, we're just gonna riff off of something that somebody else is doing.'"

Hines cites Bethesda's virtual card game The Elder Scrolls Legends as a recent example. "If it was just a true Hearthstone clone, I wouldn't have been interested," he says. "But I thought it was something different and unique, with the two lanes and the variety in terms of the colors and how the decks work. I thought it sat in a really interesting spot on the spectrum of strategy card games, from super simple to really complicated and everything in between, that I just liked where we are. Those are the kinds of things that I think get us, as a company, excited."

Fallout 76's Solution To Dealing With Griefers Is Brutal; More PvP Details Revealed
Aug 11, 2018 - 11:08 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Bethesda has discussed how Fallout 76 will deal with griefers, namely players that are intent on attacking and killing others, even when their target isn't interested in player versus player combat. As discussed during the game's QuakeCon 2018 panel by game director Todd Howard, Bethesda decided to turn griefers into content for other players by giving them a taste of their own medicine.

"We want this element of danger, without griefing," said Howard, who continued on to explain that when you shoot someone you do a little bit of damage. He equated this action to lightly slapping someone in a bar to see if they want to fight. The other player can choose to ignore this slap or engage, and if it's the latter you start doing full damage.

Those that don't want to engage in PvP but are still killed do receive some in-game justice. The player that kills someone who doesn't agree to combat becomes a "Wanted Murderer" and receives no rewards from their kill, whether it's caps or experience. This player also then appears on the map as a red star and has a bounty placed on their head. The money from that bounty is taken out the murderer's pool, and also, other players looking to cash in on that bounty aren't visible to the murderer on the map.

Players that are a higher level offer better rewards if engaged and killed. If you decided to do some PvP and are killed, you have the option to seek revenge. Doing so gives players the opportunity to get double the rewards, if they're successful on a second attempt.

RAGE 2 Eden Assault Extended Gameplay Feature
Aug 10, 2018 - 9:10 PM - by Evil Avatar

The QuakeCon 2018 Keynote brought us a delight of new RAGE 2 footage

It’s got everything. A big, beautiful, seamless open world. Explosions. Vehicle combat. Explosions. Sick f***ing powers. Explosions. In addition to providing an extended look at the world of RAGE 2 (have we mentioned explosions yet?), the QuakeCon footage also showed off the game’s massive and monstrous convoys for the first time. Check out the full video and get an idea of how the game’s convoys work.

The streets of RAGE 2 are dangerous, and not in a Hitcher way, although you probably shouldn’t just pick up strangers you see on the side of the road. In addition to some of the more commonplace faction activity – random attacks, roving patrols, etc. – you’ll also encounter many of the gigantic convoys you saw in the video.

These wheeled fortresses are heavily defended and will pose a hefty challenge to anyone ballsy enough to try to take them down. But Walker isn’t too worried. With the help of his all-purpose death machine (the Phoenix), he bobs, weaves and blasts through the enemy onslaught, deftly avoiding traps and meeting fire with fire. Taking down a convoy will net you some sweet rewards, including bigger and badder vehicle weapons for future encounters on the road.

Both the Goon Squad and the Immortal Shrouded have their own convoy networks, and these groups are stubborn; take down one convoy and a tougher one will rise up to take its route. Both factions’ convoys will be uniquely armed and defended, so don’t get too complacent with one style of attack. The convoy you encounter in the demo belongs to the Immortal Shrouded, as is evidenced by their high-tech weaponry. The smaller vehicles in the convoy can drop electric traps for Walker to avoid, and the heavier “mid-sized” vehicles are equipped with energy shields, allowing them to act as bodyguards for the leader. Of course, no convoy would be complete without pesky bikes acting as a first line of defense. Immortal Shrouded bikes can chain electric traps between them, making them perfect for creating a quick and dirty moving obstacle for Walker to overcome.

Of course, convoys are just one of the many dangers of the wasteland. In a lawless world, anything goes. Between the iron fist of The Authority, the cutting-edge technology of the Immortal Shrouded, the bloodthirsty savagery of the Goon Squad, and everything else the wasteland wants to throw at you, you’ll need to keep your head on a swivel if you want to survive.

Monster Hunter: World smashes the record for biggest Japanese launch on Steam ever
Aug 09, 2018 - 5:34 PM - by Emabulator

PC Gamer has the story.

Monster Hunter: World is off to a roaring start on PC. Just hours after the game unlocked on Steam, it's crushed the record for the biggest launch of a Japanese game in Steam's history, which Dark Souls 3 set with 129,831 concurrent players in March 2016. Monster Hunter has nearly doubled that, with a peak of 239,779 players today according to Steamcharts, an amazing number for a game that launched on consoles seven months ago.

There was no preload option for Monster Hunter: World, so that concurrent peak may continue to grow throughout the day as more people download the game. That number has already put Monster Hunter: World on the list of the biggest launches in Steam's history; it's eclipsed No Man's Sky and Civilization 6, and sits below GTA5 and Fallout 4's massive launch day numbers.

Prior to MHW, the biggest day-one numbers for a new game this year came from Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which pulled in nearly 96,000 players. For comparison's sake, Final Fantasy 15, another big Japanese RPG, had a peak of only 29,729 Steam players on release.

Patrick Stewart To Play Picard Again In New Star Trek Series For CBS All Access
Aug 05, 2018 - 3:58 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Iconic Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart has announced that he will once again portray Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series. As reported by CNET, the announcement was made during a Star Trek convention being held at Las Vegas, where Stewart appeared on stage to reveal his involvement and discuss his decision to return to the character. Stewart later posted a lengthy statement on Twitter, saying that it is "an unexpected but delightful surprise" to play Picard again.

"I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course," he said. "It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.

"During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration, and leadership," he continued.

"I feel I'm ready to return to him for the same reason--to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected, and pertinent story to life once more."

Both Mass Effect and Dragon Age have some "secret stuff" in the works at BioWare
Aug 05, 2018 - 3:00 PM - by Emabulator

GamesRadar has the story.

Just because Anthem is the big new project at BioWare doesn't mean the studio has put Mass Effect and Dragon Age in mothballs. To use another smelly sounding metaphor, they're in skunkworks. BioWare general manager Casey Hudson addressed the studio's community of fans in a mid-summer update, and though much of the message was about Anthem's pre-release presentations and progress, he did briefly touch on two of BioWare's other original universes.

"And yes - we hear loud and clear the interest in BioWare doing more Dragon Age and Mass Effect, so rest assured that we have some teams hidden away working on some secret stuff that I think you’ll really like - we’re just not ready to talk about any of it for a little while," Hudson said.

We've known for some time that Dragon Age 4 (it probably won't actually be named that) is in the works at some level, though Hudson commented earlier this summer that the team's "still trying to figure out" what it will be like. So that isn't a surprise. But it's good news for Mass Effect fans who feared the worst after that whole Mass Effect: Andromeda thing.

“We made an unfortunate mistake with our Madden NFL soundtrack. Members of our team misunderstood the fact that while we don’t have rights to include Colin Kaepernick in the game, this doesn’t affect soundtracks. We messed up, and the edit should never have happened. We will make it right, with an update to Madden NFL 19 on August 6 that will include the reference again. We meant no disrespect, and we apologize to Colin, to YG and Big Sean, to the NFL, to all of their fans and our players for this mistake.”

The original story from 5:04 p.m. CDT is as follows:

Colin Kaepernick is a name that still ends up in a lot of conversations about football, despite the former quarterback not actually having played in a number of years. Kaepernick became the center of a national conversation about protesting during the anthem when he took a knee to protest racial injustice in the country. As such, Kaepernick himself became a controversial figure among those who disagreed with him, and both he and players inspired by him have drawn the often capricious attention of president Trump's Twitter account.

With the release of Madden NFL 19, no one expected Kaepernick to be playable, having been a free agent for some time now with most NFL teams shying away from signing him (which Kaepernick has alleged is collusive in nature). Which makes it all the more odd that it appears EA has gone the extra mile in removing Kaepernick completely, going so far as to censor his name from a lyric in one of the game's EA Trax.
Note: It should be mentioned that Kaepernick is a terrible QB and would be a major distraction for any team that chose to hire him. Pro Tip: Shut up and do your job.

PlayStation Plus Games for August 2018 Announced
Aug 01, 2018 - 5:02 PM - by Evil Avatar

Mafia III and Dead by Daylight are your PlayStation Plus games for August

If you’re sat reading this in naught but your underwear, with a bag of ice tucked under each arm and an electric fan whispering sweet nothings in your general direction then please know that we don’t blame you, friend – we really don’t.

As the scorching summer continues to roast much of the northern hemisphere, here at PlayStation we’ve been using the good weather as an excuse to celebrate all things PlayStation Plus.

Continuing the Summer of Plus, this week members can pick-up extra savings in our massive Summer Sale, grab some cheeky freebies for Fortnite, Fallout Shelter and H1Z1: Battle Royale and next week, you’ll be able to download two additional bonus titles alongside your usual monthly games.

I will play Mafia III for the price of free. It always looked like a decent title that was just trying too hard to lecture us on racism. I'm sure there is a decent game hidden behind the social justice somewhere.

Monster Hunter: World has a Major Crashing Problem on PC, But a Fix is on the Way
Aug 01, 2018 - 2:52 PM - by Emabulator

PC Gamer has the story.

While our early impressions of Monster Hunter: World's PC release were largely positive, they've soured over the weekend. After 10 more hours of play, and a plenty more between the rest of PC Gamer, it's clear that Monster Hunter: World has a significant crashing problem. We reached out to Capcom for a statement, and luckily the development team is aware of the issue and a fix is on the way. The exact timing hasn't been detailed, but we'd expect to see it before Monster Hunter: World launches on PC on August 9. Until it's fixed, here's what's up and why we think it's happening.

Over the course of a four hour session, I saw about one crash an hour. Worse, when a crash occurs during a hunt, you lose all progress since the last save. Monster Hunter: World automatically saves after missions, but any significant crafting or item management between hunts goes down the tube. Quick load times are something of a salve, but hopping back into a multiplayer hunt after a crash after too much time disqualifies you for rewards attached to the quest. You'll still get to harvest the beast at the end, but no bonuses for you.

Considering that hunts can take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes, and that Monster Hunter: World is a game fundamentally designed around repetition, it is a devastating, unacceptable problem.

So why is it happening? We're not positive, but all signs point toward undue stress on the CPU. Capcom has acknowledged and explained why Monster Hunter: World is such a CPU-heavy game, but it might be too dependent on our PCs' brains in its pre-release state.

Valve's Artifact Will Be Playable At PAX West, Releases In November
Aug 01, 2018 - 2:19 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Valve has announced that Artifact, their trading card game based on Dota 2, will be playable at PAX West in Seattle at the end of this month. Additionally, they've also revealed that the game will release on November 28 for $20 on Steam, with mobile versions coming in 2019.

Valve announced the card game during their International Dota 2 tournament last year, which makes one of the faster turnarounds for Valve-announced games. While we got a chance to check the game out earlier this year, the PAX West showing is the first time the public will get a chance to test it out.

It would not be surprising if we also see a bit more of Artifact at The International 2018 when it takes place later this month, but fans who want to get hands-on will have to try it out at PAX in Seattle on August 31. For everyone else, November 28 is not that far away.

Nintendo Switch Sales Near 20 Million, Down Slightly on Last Year
Jul 31, 2018 - 3:36 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

Nintendo shifted another 1.88m Switch consoles between April and June this year, bringing the console's lifetime sales total up to 19.6m.

This figure is down slightly on the same quarter last year, when it sold 1.97m over the same three months, albeit soon after the console's launch and during a period when Nintendo released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Arms.

Switch is still selling well, then, and roughly equivalent to the PlayStation 4 at the same point in its lifecycle (while only having had one holiday sales period when PS4 had had two). And, importantly, game sales more than doubled over the same period last year - where Nintendo makes a lot of its money.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze sold 1.4m copies since May, while Mario Tennis Aces is already up to 1.38m copies in its first couple of weeks on sale. Combined sales of the two Nintendo Labo sets totaled 1.39m units.

On 3DS, Nintendo sold another 360k handhelds and 2.95m games - both figures unsurprisingly down year-on-year in this, the 3DS' eighth year of release.

Meanwhile, Nintendo's re-release of the NES mini microconsole shifted another 1.26m units. Kerching!

Spider-Man Has Gone Gold For September Release on PS4
Jul 30, 2018 - 3:54 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Pretty much every PlayStation 4 owner is anticipating September's release of Marvel's Spider-Man, the open-world superhero game starring everyone's favorite webslinger. Today, Insomniac tweeted out that Spider-Man has gone gold, meaning that a master disc has been printed and sent off to manufacturers.

That means the copy you buy at a retail store has basically been finished, not including any post-gold development that might come between now and release.

The image references a meme taken from the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon, showing Spider-Man sitting at a desk with a picture of himself in the back. The actual scene is from the episode Electro the Human Lightning Bolt and involves Spider-Man taking cover behind a desk, but the meme took on a life of its own. Insomniac added their own flair to it by appending Spider-Man's picture once again to the gold disc in the back.

Cyberpunk 2077 Is Not Going To Shy Away From Politics
Jul 30, 2018 - 2:11 PM - by BeardedSonOfNel

Via Gamesradar+
Cyberpunk 2077 draws from a genre rich in parallels, allegories, and straight-up warnings for modern life, and developer CD Projekt Red has no plans to strip those away - even if it would be easier just to make a game about cool cyborgs wearing trench coats. In an interview with Official Xbox Magazine Australia (via PC Gamer), CDPR quest designer Patrick Mills talked about how Cyberpunk 2077 will address the deeply political themes of its source material.

"Cyberpunk 2077 is a game about people with power at the top and people at the bottom with none," Mills said. "That power can come from money, hierarchies, technology, and violence. The original Cyberpunk 2020 setting, like the setting of The Witcher stories, was a complex critique of the author's world, and we don't shy away from that in our games. On the contrary, I think it's one of the things that sets us apart [...] Cyberpunk is an inherently political genre and it's an inherently political franchise."

Portal 2 Co-Writer Jay Pinkerton is Back at Valve
Jul 29, 2018 - 3:56 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

Valve veteran Jay Pinkerton has returned to the developer a year after he left the company.

Pinkerton left last June, following other high profile departures from Erik Wolpaw, Chet Faliszek, and DOTA 2 writer Marc Laidlaw.

Now, thanks to eagle-eyed Redditor OWLverlord (via PC Gamer), it seems Pinkerton is back on Valve's staff page, listed under the "Other Experts" category.

Pinkerton co-wrote not just Portal 2, but also contributed to Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2. He also penned the Team Fortress 2 comics, which has some Redditors speculating that's what he's back to do.

Destiny 2 PvP Targets Quicker Time to Kill
Jul 28, 2018 - 1:15 PM - by Emabulator

Plan C. Eurogamer has the story.

Bungie has confirmed Destiny 2 weapons will soon do more damage in competitive multiplayer, effectively lowering the "time to kill" in The Crucible.

The confirmation came after expert Destiny 2 player and streamer tripleWRECK noticed an increased amount of damage in gameplay footage of the upcoming Breakthrough mode.

In a post on the Destiny subreddit, tripleWRECK pointed out auto rifles used in the gameplay footage were doing more damage per crit than they currently do in the game - an increase of 24 per cent.

"This brings the 600rpm archetype to the same shots-per kill as its D1 counterpart; lowering its optimal TTK from 1.10s to 0.90s," tripleWRECK said.

Bungie then confirmed this in its Weekly Update. The developer said it had globally adjusted the time to kill in the Crucible, and mentioned it would go into more detail in an upcoming stream.

This has certainly gone down well with Destiny 2 PvP enthusiasts, who have long-called for a quicker time to kill in Destiny 2's Crucible after the game launched with a more strategic focus for PvP.

Star Wars Episode 9 Includes Carrie Fisher By Using Old Footage
Jul 27, 2018 - 5:48 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Despite previous statements to the contrary, the late Carrie Fisher will reprise her role as Leia Organa in the upcoming Star Wars Episode IX. Lucasfilm confirmed the news as part of a broader announcement regarding casting and other details, which also revealed that Mark Hamill will be in the new movie.

In a post on the official Star Wars website, Lucasfilm said it will use "previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in order to include Fisher, who passed away in December 2016. Notably, Episode IX is being directed by JJ Abrams, who also helmed The Force Awakens before Rian Johnson took over for The Last Jedi, which was thought to be Fisher's final Star Wars role.

"We desperately loved Carrie Fisher," Abrams said in a statement. "Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie's legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII."

This news comes as a surprise. Fisher's brother said last year that "recent footage" of the actress would be used to allow her to make an appearance in Episode IX. But Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy later denied this was the case, stating that Fisher would not be included in the movie. Prior to that, Lucasfilm said it would not recreate her using CGI.

Disney and Fox shareholders approve blockbuster $71-billion deal
Jul 27, 2018 - 1:27 PM - by Emabulator

The Los Angeles Times has the story.

Walt Disney Co. and 21st Century Fox Inc. shareholders on Friday overwhelmingly approved Disney’s proposed $71.3-billion takeover of much of Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox — a milestone in a merger that is expected to dramatically reshape the entertainment industry.

The deal’s contours began to form nearly a year ago over wine between Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger and Murdoch at the elder mogul’s Moraga vineyard above Bel-Air. Friday’s vote was more official: The two companies held separate shareholder meetings concurrently in the same Hilton hotel a couple of blocks from Fox’s headquarters in mid-town Manhattan.

Neither Murdoch nor Iger were in attendance. The meetings, which took just 12 minutes, were conducted by the company’s general counsels and other members of senior staff.

Fox general counsel Gerson A. Zweifach first announced that its five proposals had been approved by proxies of “a majority vote.” A few minutes later, at the Disney meeting, Disney general counsel Alan Braverman announced that Disney’s sole measure — to issue additional shares to buy Fox — also had been approved by shareholders. Braverman then adjourned the meeting.

The lightning-quick approval caps Murdoch’s decision in December to accept Disney’s $52-billion bid for Fox’s television and movie studio, cable television channels FX and National Geographic, Fox’s stake in streaming service Hulu, television operations in India and Fox’s 39% stake in London-based pay-TV company Sky.

Battlefield V's Grand Operations Will Be AWOL At Launch
Jul 27, 2018 - 11:17 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Grand Operations, the mode that EA used to announced Battlefield V, will not be available in the game when it's released in October. The publisher revealed that detail in a new post highlighting the mode, which is an expanded version of the Operations mode introduced in Battlefield 1.

"Grand Operations is the ultimate multiplayer experience, designed to seamlessly showcase the maps and modes of Battlefield V," EA says. "Each Grand Operation presents a powerful narrative experience inspired by historical events. Shortly after launch, you will be able to take part in the first Grand Operation. In the months that follow, you’ll continue the fight across other unseen and unplayed battlefields of World War 2."

Matt Bertz played the mode at E3 last month, and he said it was a good time. At the same time, he was apprehensive about how much content would be available in the game at launch. He may have been talking about DICE's plan to roll out additional maps in the order the real-world events happened during World War II, but his point still stands.

We don't know what "shortly after launch" translates to specifically, but one thing's for sure: Neither of the two modes that EA highlighted at E3 (Grand Operations and battle royale) are going to be playable when the game launches on October 19.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance Games Delisted Without Notice
Jul 26, 2018 - 4:14 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

The Marvel Ultimate Alliance games, action RPGs featuring huge casts of Marvel characters, have been delisted from digital distribution services suddenly and without warning from publisher Activision.

A post on Reddit noticed the games missing today. There had been speculation about them getting delisted due to the frequency in which the two titles were appearing on sale. The games were on both PlayStation Network, Steam, and Xbox Live sales multiple times in the last two months, but Activision had not announced anything. Now, the game is missing from all three of those services.

The games were ported from previous generation consoles to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2016, two years from today. While people who own the game can still play it unimpeded, anyone who was hoping to get it in the future or came back from a Marvel movie looking for a game to play can't look to this one any longer.
