The Oscar Nominations Announced #Oscars
Jan 22, 2019 - 7:41 AM - by Evil Avatar

The list of Oscar Nominations are out and the choices for best picture are... not good.

Black Panther
Bohemian Rhapsody
The Favorite
Green Book
A Star Is Born
I see the Academy managed to virtue signal their way into avoiding another #OscarsSoWhite hash tag, but at the cost of nominating a bunch of crap no one cares about. Ratings this year are going to be devastating.

RIOT: Civil Unrest Gameplay Trailer
Jan 21, 2019 - 9:59 AM - by Emabulator

Jan 21, 2019 - Manchester, UK. - Merge Games Ltd., is set to release RIOT: Civil Unrest, a real-time riot simulation experience. Launching Feb 5 - 7, 2019 across PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, RIOT: Civil Unrest is a unique, thought-provoking experience that places you at the heart of some of the world’s most recent confrontations. Spread across four campaigns and over 30 individual scenarios, from Oakland in California to Tahrir Square in Egypt and Caracas in Venezuela, RIOT: Civil Unrest lets players control either the protestors or law enforcement in an effort to portray a balanced view of each event.

Featuring some of the best pixel art graphics ever seen, RIOT: Civil Unrest was born out of the real-life experiences of its artist and creator, Leonard Menchiari. During the summer of 2011 Leonard attended the NO-TAV protests in northern Italy. There he witnessed first-hand the actions of both the protestors and law enforcement officers which lead him to create RIOT: Civil Unrest. He created it to tell the stories and express the emotions felt during these clashes. What triggers the anger and aggression? Often outnumbered, what does a police officer endure during the conflict?

A complex strategy game, RIOT: Civil Unrest sets players objectives for each scenario. It’s then up to the individual to choose how to tackle each situation, employing different strategies and tactics in order to achieve the perfect outcome. Discover if you can you dispel an angry crowd or overcome a well-equipped militia with RIOT: Civil Unrest. Player performance is rated, aggression can lead to a quick, successful outcome but a softer approach may have the same resolution without damaging public opinion.

RIOT: Civil Unrest boasts impressive crowd behaviour. Each individual character has its own artificial intelligence that gives the overall crowd mass very realistic and fluid movement. The PC version also boasts a powerful editor that allows users to create and share their own scenarios. The editor comes complete with additional scenarios made by the Bologna-based development team, including: G20 – Hamburg, Gilets Jaunes – Paris, Shohada Square – Iran and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

RIOT: Civil Unrest will be available for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch in early February 2019.

Sean Penn TV Show About Going To Mars Canceled After 1 Season
Jan 20, 2019 - 11:17 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Streaming network Hulu's TV show The First, which starred Sean Penn as an astronaut trying to go to Mars, has been canceled after one season. Created by House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, The First marked Senn's first time as a regular on a TV show. The Hollywood Reporter was along the news sites to confirm the show's cancellation.

It's just the latest cancellation from Hulu, as the network recently axed comedian Sarah Silverman's show, I Love You, America, also only after one season.

Hulu, like Netflix, does not release viewership figures for its original content, so we don't know how well The First performed. What's clear, however, is that the ratings were not good enough to keep the show going for a second season.

Bungie Reaffirms Commitment to Destiny and Discusses Future Steps
Jan 19, 2019 - 10:11 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Hot off the heels of its split from Activision, Bungie is already discussing openly its plans and goals for Destiny. In the latest "This Week At Bungie" blog, franchise director Luke Smith took some time to assure fans that Destiny is still Bungie's main focus. The blog post opens with a thank you to Activision, High Moon Studios, and lastly, Vicarious Visions "who is currently readying their Destiny swan song with content that will appear in the upcoming Season of [Redacted]. "

After the tease, Smith outlined short-term and long-term goals. Right now, Bungie is executing on its promises for the Annual Pass content. "We've learned a lot from Black Armory that we will apply to future releases, most notably that we'd like the beginning experiences of content drops to be a better point of convergence for the playerbase," Smith said, noting that the power requirement for the first forge was "too high."

"We want to find the line between new content that many players can play, and aspirational content for players to progress toward. We're exploring improvements to catch-up mechanics for players in upcoming seasons," he explained.

For those worried about Destiny's path going forward, Smith reassured fans that more content is on the way and the future looks bright. "Long-term, Bungie is committed to Destiny," he said. "We created the universe and we hold its future entirely in our hands. The vast majority of the team is hard at work envisioning future experiences, enemies, and ways to play the Guardian you've been building since 2014. We're going to keep doing that."

Jan 18, 2019 - 7:21 AM - by Evil Avatar

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid to Feature Rangers Vs. Villains Team Combat Across Multiple Gaming Platforms

For over 25 years Power Rangers has been one of the most popular franchises in the world. As a perennial Top 10 NPD Action Brand, the globally renowned brand has spawned hit TV shows, movies, toys, comics, live entertainment and games. Today, nWay, the developer and publisher behind Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, the hit multiplayer mobile game with over 45 million downloads, is partnering with Hasbro and global content leader Lionsgate to announce Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid. The new cross-platform fighting game will be available as a digital download for $19.99 first on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in April 2019, and then as a PC release later in the year.

The game is now available for pre-order at battleforthegrid.com. PlayStation 4 pre-orders will start shortly. Those ordering prior to launch will receive an exclusive bonus of the Green Ranger V2 character skin and a digital art book. In addition, a special Digital Collector’s Edition will be available to pre-order for $39.99, which contains the full game download, Season One Pass (which will include three new characters, their Arcade story, and a new warrior skin), and exclusive Lord Drakkon Evo II and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Pink Ranger character skins.

“Power Rangers fans have been asking for a high fidelity fighting game on console and PC that match up iconic Rangers and villains across the expansive Power Rangers multiverse for quite some time now,” said Taehoon Kim, co-founder and CEO of nWay. “We wanted to deliver this to the fans and make sure it has cross-play and cross-progression capabilities as we believe playing with friends across multiple platforms at the same time is where the future of gaming is headed.”

Power Ranger: Battle for the Grid is an easy to learn but hard to master fighting game that delivers a modern take on the Power Rangers franchise. The game features stunning graphics with vivid details and pits new and classic Rangers and villains against each other in team battles. Featuring a streamlined combat system, the game welcomes newcomers to the genre with simplified controls, while maintaining depth and detail for more intense and experienced competitors. Players will be challenged to test their skills online against friends and other players around the world, providing endless replayability. With new content and game modes releasing throughout the year, the game will continuously offer the community new ways to play and compete.

With cross-play across multiple platforms, all players whether on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch or PC, will be in the same player pool and will have the ability to compete against each other in real-time. Even when players change their platform, their mission progress they have worked to achieve will still be available to them, allowing for cross-progression and true seamless gameplay no matter where they play.

“Since the acquisition of the Power Rangers IP, we’ve been looking forward to bringing Power Rangers fans memorable experiences. With Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, we’re expanding the portfolio of great Power Rangers games to more platforms,” said Mark Blecher, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Business Affairs at Hasbro.

“The Power Rangers have proven to be an enduring global phenomenon among audiences of all ages,” said Daniel Engelhardt, Senior Vice President of Interactive Ventures & Games at Lionsgate. “We are excited to build upon our successful mobile game, Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, to offer a unique opportunity for fans to enjoy a new cross-platform fighting game experience on console and PC.”

More details on Power Ranger: Battle for the Grid will be released in the coming weeks.

Hitman Developer IO Interactive Opens New Studio, Hints At New Games
Jan 16, 2019 - 9:41 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Hitman creator IO Interactive has opened a new studio in Malmo, Sweden, the company has announced. The developer says the new site will "strengthen IO Interactive's commitment to deliver exceptional content to the Hitman franchise," though it also hints at other projects in the works.

“Furthermore, this will expand our muscles for creating brand-new and exciting endeavours, new universes, new franchises," said IOI CEO Hakan Abrak. "In other words, IOI Malmo and [existing studio] Copenhagen are one family."

As yet there's no clue what IOI is working on beyond additional Hitman 2 levels and missions, though it has previously stated it wanted Hitman (2016) to consist of three seasons of content. The studio is primarily known for creating and developing the Hitman franchise, but it has also worked on the Kane & Lynch series and the 2003 shooter Freedom Fighters--though it should be noted the studio does not own the latter two brands.

EA Cancels Open-World Star Wars Game
Jan 16, 2019 - 7:10 AM - by Evil Avatar

Electronic Arts has canceled its open-world Star Wars game, according to three people familiar with goings-on at the company. The game, announced alongside the shutdown of Visceral Games back in 2017, had been in development at EA’s large office in Vancouver.

EA Vancouver, a large studio that mostly handles support for a variety of the publisher’s games including FIFA and Battlefront, had been working on this open-world Star Wars game since October 2017, when EA closed Visceral Games. Until then, Visceral—best known for its popular Dead Space horror series—was developing its own Star Wars game. That project, code-named Ragtag, was a linear action-adventure game directed by Uncharted director Amy Hennig. EA Vancouver had been assisting on the project, and when EA closed Visceral Games on October 17, 2017, the Vancouver studio took it over.

But it wouldn’t be accurate to say that EA Vancouver’s Star Wars was the same game as Ragtag. When EA Vancouver took over, it rebooted this Star Wars project entirely, keeping some of the art assets but transforming it into an open-world game.

Now, that project is canceled, too.

Ghostbusters 3 in Development for 2020 Launch
Jan 16, 2019 - 7:08 AM - by Evil Avatar

"Ghostbusters" is coming back to the big screen in the summer of 2020, with a new version directed by Jason Reitman.

Yes, Reitman is the filmmaker son of Ivan Reitman, who directed and produced the original 1984 comedic hit "Ghostbusters" with Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis.

"Finally got the keys to the car. #GB20," Jason Reitman wrote on Twitter Tuesday.

Sony Entertainment Studios says the new film will go into production this summer, but shared no other details about cast or the new story. There is no formal indication of the million-dollar question: What role the living original cast members, Murray and Aykroyd (Ramis died in 2014), will have in the new movie, if any.

In an interview with EW.com, Reitman said he would divert from director Paul Feig's 2016 reboot of "Ghostbusters" that featured an all-women cast that included Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones. Reitman will go back to the original universe his father created in the present day story.

Distant Worlds 2 Launches for the Edge of the Galaxy
Jan 15, 2019 - 7:04 AM - by Evil Avatar

Polygon has a couple of good articles online talking about #DistantWorlds2, the player-run Elite Dangerous 18-Week journey to the edge of the galaxy and back.

On Jan. 13, 2018 nearly 12,000 commanders in Elite: Dangerous embarked on an epic, 200,000-light year journey to the edge of the Milky Way.

What began as a bold adventure for a single player named Commander Erimus Kamzel has spawned the largest fleet in MMO history. With nearly 12,000 players signed up on day one, the fleet is roughly 10 times larger than the one assembled for the original Distant Worlds in 2016. The one-way trip to Beagle Point, the star farthest from the center of Elite’s simulation of our Milky Way galaxy, will take roughly 18 weeks. Then, the fleet will need to chart a course home.
I own this one for the PS4 and I keep meaning to get back to it. What I played of it on the PC and the PS4 was great, if slightly less colorful than No Man's Sky.

The Epic Games Store Has Changed Its Refund Policy To Match Steam's
Jan 13, 2019 - 11:36 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

The Epic Games Store has announced a change in its refund policy. Epic Games director of publishing strategy Sergey Galyonkin revealed the change on Twitter, writing that people will be able to refund a game provided it is "within 14 days of purchase and under 2 hours played." You will also now have unlimited refunds through Epic, giving the game store the same policy as Steam.

According to Variety, to previously refund a game on Epic, you had to submit a ticket. From there, you'd get a verification request where you'd need to fill out several fields of information, including your public IP address, the date your Epic Games account was created, an invoice ID, your location, your account's display name, the final four numbers of the debit or credit card connected to your account, and the date of your last login. Only then would your ticket be reviewed.

Now, provided you ask within the 14 days and two hours played guidelines, you only need to submit a ticket through player support to get the refund. "The team is working on the self-service solution, but for now, you'll have to go through player support," Galyonkin said.

Lawsuit Alleges Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford Wrongful $12M Bonus & Underage Porn
Jan 11, 2019 - 5:31 PM - by Emabulator

Destructoid has the story.

Strap in

There's going to be some messy litigation in Texas. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford and former Gearbox in-house attorney Wade Callender are suing each other in two separate actions, both alleging that the other has breached their legal obligations to the company.

As discovered by Kotaku, Gearbox originally filed a lawsuit against Callender in November 2018 for misusing company funds. It's said that Callender borrowed money from the company for a home loan and tuition that wasn't fully paid back. Further, Callender is accused of abusing a Gearbox company credit card for personal expenses such as "family vacations, gun club memberships and firearms accessories, and trying to get six-pack abs."

The case against Callender, which was filed in Texas' Collin County District Court, can be accessed here but there's no option to view the individual pleadings. However, Callendar answered the Complaint earlier this week and also filed a motion to change venue.

Callender then sued both Pitchford and Gearbox in December 2018, possibly in retaliation to Gearbox's lawsuit. The entire Complaint can be read here. The crux of the lawsuit is that Callender says Pitchford took a secretive $12 million bonus from Take-Two Interactive in 2016 that was funneled into Pitchford Entertainment Media Magic, LLC. According to Callender, that money should have rightfully been paid out to Gearbox employees and to help fund the development of the next Borderlands game.

However, things take a dark twist. Callender also states that Pitchford accidentally forgot a USB drive at a Dallas-area Medieval Times restaurant in 2014. Callender alleges that the USB drive contained both highly-sensitive business documents and "underage pornography." Pitchford was supposedly in San Francisco at the time the drive was recovered, and Callender -- without yet knowing the contents of the drive -- directed Gearbox staff to duplicate the files so they could be sent to Pitchford. Pitchford allegedly intervened and ordered the duplicate files to be immediately destroyed. Callender goes on to also accuse Pitchford of using Gearbox company funds to throw personal parties at his house where older men would expose themselves to minors.

AMD Releases Radeon 7 Benchmarks for 25 Games
Jan 11, 2019 - 3:22 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

After announcing the Radeon 7 a few days ago, AMD has stealth-released a more comprehensive set of benchmark results that show how the upcoming card performs in 25 recent games compared to the current top Team Red GPU, the RX Vega 64, benched at 4K resolution on maximum settings. The benchmarks were contained in footnotes to AMD's press materials, and first came to light courtesy of HardOCP.

Broadly, the results bear out AMD's claim of around a 25 per cent leap in performance from one generation to the next, although increases as low as 7.5 per cent in Hitman 2 and as high as 68.3 per cent in Fallout 76 are included in the results.

If we compare AMD's provided results to our existing benchmarks, we can see that our Vega 64 scores for Ghost Recon Wildlands and Assassin's Creed Odyssey are practically identical, suggesting that AMD's definition of '4K Max' is the same as ours in these titles. That means we can suggest how the Radeon 7 would compare against a wider range of cards in these titles, particularly as any differences in CPU performance are likely to be negligible when running these games at 4K and max settings (AMD benched using an i7 7700K, while we've moved on to the i7 8700K).

Activision Names Call Of Duty Head Robert Kostich As New President
Jan 10, 2019 - 9:51 AM - by Emabulator

After a number of high profile departures from Activision Blizzard's corporate, such as a CFO that left for Netflix and Sledgehammer's founder leaving soon after being promoted, the company is quick to fill open chairs and name key promotions within the company. Most notably, Robert Kostich, who is amazingly not Bobby Kotick under an assumed name, has been promoted to the position of Activision president.

Kostich has been head of the Call of Duty franchise over the last ten years, shepherding it during its lower points and its recent higher ones. He also oversaw the Call of Duty esports initiatives during his tenure. He'll be assuming a similar role as head of Activision, except for all games in the company's portfolio.

Humam Sakhnini was named president of King Entertainment, Activision's $6 billion dollar acquisition, while Dennis Durkin was also named president of Activision Blizzard’s emerging businesses as well as serving as CFO. Bobby Kotick remains CEO, while J. Allen Brack stays president of Blizzard.

Red Dead 2 Online Updates Outlined, Will Remain In Beta For Now
Jan 10, 2019 - 9:14 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in October to much acclaim, with its multiplayer component, Red Dead Online, launching in late November. The online mode hasn't been received quite as warmly, though Rockstar did distinguish in advance that it was only a beta. That will remain the case for the foreseeable future, although the company has outlined some of the updates and new content that are on the way.

In a blog post announcing the launch of a new battle royale-style mode called Gun Rush, Rockstar stated, "Red Dead Online will stay in beta for a few more months yet as we have many more new gameplay features to add across the board as well as further changes to improve, stabilize and refine the overall experience."

Gears of War 5 Will Support Keyboard and Mouse on Xbox One
Jan 09, 2019 - 8:40 PM - by BeardedSonOfNel

Via TweakTown
Razer is one of the growing peripheral-makers that are bringing their mice and keyboards to the Xbox One, and a new updated list of supported games shows some titles that aren't even out yet. Gears of War 5 is listed (with Chroma support no less), but this isn't a surprise, and in fact we should see all of Microsoft's major first-party games get KB&M support. With KB&M support, Microsoft continues blurring the lines between consoles and PC, which was the plan all along. This is an important piece of the cross-platform ecosystem Microsoft has created, and since every new first-party Microsoft game is coming to PC as well, we should see these games also get KB&M support on Xbox.

The Division 2 Will Release on the Epic Store, Not Steam
Jan 09, 2019 - 3:04 PM - by Emabulator

PC Gamer has the story.

Epic Games scored a big one today with the announcement of a partnership with Ubisoft that will see at least some of its future PC releases come to the Epic Games Store, and not to Steam. As reported by Polygon, the semi-exclusive deal will begin in March with the launch of The Division 2.

"We have no plans currently on releasing Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 on Steam," a Ubisoft rep said. Ubisoft and Epic will "also partner on additional select titles [coming to the Epic Games Store] to be announced during the coming year."

"We entrust Epic to deliver a smooth journey for our fans, from preordering the game and enjoying our Beta to the launch of Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 on March 15," Ubisoft vice president of partnerships Chris Early said in the announcement. "Epic continues to disrupt the videogame [sic] industry, and their third party digital distribution model is the latest example, and something Ubisoft wants to support."

AMD Announces Radeon 7 Graphics Card with 16GB VRAM at CES 2019
Jan 09, 2019 - 2:00 PM - by Emabulator

The Digital Foundry at Eurogamer has the story.

AMD has announced its second-generation Vega graphics card, the Radeon 7. This is the first 7nm graphics card on the market, and the long-awaited answer to Nvidia's high-end 10-series and 20-series cards.

Compared to AMD's previous top card, the Vega 64, the Radeon 7 should offer between 25 to 40 per cent higher frame-rates at 4K resolution and max settings. Generally, AMD is promising that the Radeon 7 will offer slightly better frame-rates than the RTX 2080 in DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 titles, and significantly higher performance for games that support Vulkan.

Radeon 7 graphics cards should also incorporate a staggering amount of memory - the model shown on stage includes 16GB of HBM2 memory with 1TB per second of memory bandwidth. In comparison, the RTX 2080 sports just 8GB of GDDR6 memory and bandwidth of 448GB/s, while Nvidia's top-end RTX 2080 Ti moves up to 11GB with bandwidth of 616GB/s.

Despite the substantial increase in performance over last-generation Vega cards, AMD promises power usage remains in the same ballpark - a good thing, given that Nvidia has long enjoyed an advantage against AMD in power efficiency and thermals. It looks like the new card's 7nm process may have allowed AMD to reap some efficiency rewards. It's also helped by a triple-fan design, and what looks to be a substantial chassis with two eight-pin PCIe power connectors.

New handcrafted Yoshi and Kirby games launching in March
Jan 09, 2019 - 8:06 AM - by Evil Avatar

If you’re a fan of Yoshi and Kirby you are going to love the month of March. That’s because two big Nintendo adventures are launching that month – each featuring a beautiful handcrafted style, platforming gameplay for players of all ages and beloved Nintendo characters.

Yoshi’s Crafted World, a new adventure and the first game starring Yoshi for Nintendo Switch, launches exclusively for the system on March 29.

In the game, you play as an adorable Yoshi exploring a big world crafted from household items like boxes and paper cups, journeying through each themed stage to solve puzzles and find hidden treasures. On the flip side, stages can be played backward, providing new perspectives to explore and the challenge to find Poochy-Pups that are hiding around the course. You can even join up with a friend to play through the game in two-player co-op. For more information about the Yoshi’s Crafted World game for the Nintendo Switch system, visit nintendo.com/yoshis-crafted-world.

In this enhanced version of the acclaimed Kirby’s Epic Yarn game that originally launched for the Wii system, Kirby is transported into a world made of cloth and yarn to unravel enemies, unzip secret passageways and transform into powerful vehicles. Every stage in the original Wii version is stitched in, but this Nintendo 3DS version has some new features, like Ravel Abilities that power up Kirby in fun ways, new mini-games featuring familiar faces King Dedede and Meta Knight, new furniture to personalize and decorate Kirby’s Pad, and a new Devilish mode that adds an extra layer of challenge to each stage.

Some of the Ravel Abilities include a giant yarn ball used to attack enemies, a wire sword that can slice through anything and the Nylon ability, which can generate wind for jumping higher and collecting beads.

The creative, colorful and visually stunning game also features new amiibo functionality for compatible Kirby series amiibo figures that gives Kirby hats and abilities based on the figure used. For more information about the Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn game, visit nintendo.com/kirbys-extra-epic-yarn.

Alien: Blackout is a Crappy Phone Game
Jan 07, 2019 - 6:44 AM - by Evil Avatar

‘Alien: Blackout’ is a Survival Horror Mobile Game Starring Amanda Ripley

“Alien: Blackout” is a mobile game in development from FoxNext Games, D3 Go!, and Rival Games that puts players in the boots of Amanda Ripley aboard an alien-infested Weyland-Yutani space station.

In the game, players need to guide their crew to safety and avoid encounters with the alien. The game will be available for download on the App Store, Google Play, and the Amazon Appstore, according to the publisher.

Developer D3 Go!’s official website includes details on the upcoming game including this description:

“The terror of Alien is brought to life in ‘Alien: Blackout.’ Try to stay alive while trapped aboard a crippled Weyland-Yutani space station carrying a deadly Xenomorph as it tirelessly hunts you and the crew. Outsmart the perfect hunter by making perilous choices. Players must rely on the damaged controls of the space station or risk sacrificing crew members to avoid deadly contact, permanently altering the outcome of the game.

“Survive seven fear-inducing levels by remotely guiding Amanda Ripley’s crew through increasingly challenging tasks using only the station’s emergency systems. The uncertainty and unpredictability of both the alien and her crew can impose total defeat for Amanda and the entire station.”

D3 GO!’s previous titles include “Marvel Puzzle Quest,” and “Magic the Gathering – Puzzle Quest.”

Rival Games is an independent game developer in Turku, Finland, the studio developed the “Thief of Thieves” game and is in the process of developing “The Detail.”

Word of the upcoming survival horror game first surfaced in November after 20th Century Fox trademarked “Alien: Blackout” under the categories which include “game software” and “on-line computer games,” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

Last week, the official Twitter account for the Alien franchise sent out a set of tweets teasing Monday’s announcement.

The tweets also advertise the “Alien” trilogy on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital. The use of the hashtag “readplaywatch” seems to reference the game, trilogy, and some third element — perhaps a book or comic.

And the legacy of Alien games that suck just keeps on rolling.
