CD Projekt Red: "We leave greed to others"
Nov 19, 2017 - 3:42 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

CD Projekt joint-CEO Adam Kicinski rattled fans when, in a Polish interview with Strefa Inwestorow, he said things like, "we're interested in Cyberpunk being commercially even more significant", and, "Online is very necessary, or very recommended if you wish to achieve long-term success."

Cyberpunk 2077 having online multiplayer is not something we've heard for a while but it is something CD Projekt Red has talked about before, even as long ago as in 2013, when studio head Adam Badowski told me Cyberpunk 2077 will be "a story-based RPG experience with amazing single-player playthroughs, but we're going to add multiplayer features".

The worry is not only whether synchronous multiplayer like this will detract from the kind of single-player experience we're all hoping CD Projekt Red can deliver in Cyberpunk 2077, but whether, in relation to being "commercially even more significant", multiplayer will be a conduit for the game taking more of our cash, through microtransactions or whatever.

Given the storm surrounding Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and loot boxes in general, it's an understandable concern, and presumably why CD Projekt Red felt the need to write the tweet it did.

"Worry not," replied CDPR to Pretty Good Gaming, in response to a video airing similar concerns. "When thinking [Cyberpunk 2077], think nothing less than [The Witcher 3] - huge single-player, open world, story-driven RPG. No hidden catch, you get what you pay for - no bullshit, just honest gaming like with Wild Hunt."

Then the clincher: "We leave greed to others."

Microtransactions in Star Wars Battlefront 2 Suspended Due to Pressure From Disney
Nov 18, 2017 - 1:03 PM - by Emabulator

As EvAv member Paranoia pointed out in this thread, it looks like the reason EA and DICE "temporarily" turned off microtransactions in Star Wars Battlefront II was because Disney told them to. VG247 has the story.

It appears the decision to temporarily remove microtransactions from Star Wars Battlefront 2 was due to pressure from Disney.

Reports from various sources state EA’s temporary removal of purchasable Crystals in Star Wars Sattlefront 2 was made after a phone call from Disney, which owns the Star Wars franchise.

EA removed the option to purchase in-game Crystals ahead of the game’s launch yesterday. These Crystals are obtained using real money and packs of Crystals start at $5 for 500 and up to $100 for 12,000 Crystals.

According to a source speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Disney was less than pleased over the online backlash and bad press Star Wars Battlefront 2 was receiving over the microtransactions, not to mention the convoluted rewards system.

This didn’t sit well with Disney CEO Robert Iger, according to the WSJ, and resulted in Disney’s head of consumer products and interactive media, Jimmy Pitaro, to contact EA.

A source speaking with VentureBeat stated Pitaro gave EA CEO Andrew Wilson a ring, resulting in microtransactions being temorarily suspended until the system could be revamped.

Another source, speaking with MP1st, corroborated the report. The site reached out to EA for comment, and was told the company wouldn’t provide comment on the matter.

EA "temporarily" turns off Microtransactions in Star Wars Battlefront II
Nov 16, 2017 - 7:48 PM - by Evil Avatar

Electronic Arts has announced that they have "temporarily" turned off the pay-to-win real money crystal purchases in the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront II.

My take would be that they will turn them back on the second they get past the holiday shopping season. This is just to try to salvage their week 1 sales now that word is out about this game and the review scores are bad.

SNK Announces It Is Profitable Again After Pivoting Back To Video Games
Nov 15, 2017 - 1:19 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

It's been a rocky few years for SNK, but it was very happy to point out today that it is finally profitable again.

SNK shared its official financial statements in Gazette Magazine today, showing off that the company is doing quite well for itself now despite being in the negatives last year. The difference is significant as well – in FY 2016, the developer posted a loss of 558 million yen, while FY 2017 brought it to a 3.105 billion yen net profit. In other words, it reversed its fortunes.

The company had been struggling slightly after its acquisition by Chinese company 37Games. CEO Koichi Toyama decided that the developer would turn its back on the semi-lucrative pachinko business and focus on video games again, rebranding as SNK instead of SNK Playmore. The first initiative of this newfound passion for games was King of Fighters XIV, which has apparently done quite well for SNK.

Disney Pulls License for Marvel Heroes

“We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we (Disney) have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.”
No official word from the publisher, Gazillion, just yet. It's worth noting that the in-game cash shops are still open for business, presumably to milk as much money from unsuspecting players as they can before they shut down for good.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Reviews "why you don't tie gameplay to microtransactions"
Nov 14, 2017 - 1:54 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer - No Score Given

Star Wars Battlefront 2, for all its faults, remains a game that can get to the kernel of what makes the series so beloved. It's just a shame that, for now, it's also inherited some of its uglier excesses too.
USgamer - 3.5/5

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is one of the most enjoyable multiplayer games of 2017, especially if you like Star Wars. It's also more flawed than it should be. Battlefront 2 doesn't deserve to be wholly defined by loot boxes, but it's inescapable given the impact they have on some of the core modes. This is why you don't tie gameplay to microtransactions.
Game Informer - 6.5/10

The dark side courses through Star Wars Battlefront II, playing mind tricks on gamers to spend more money to become stronger. By the time you read this review, there’s a chance EA may change how the Star Cards or loot crates work, but at this point in time, this predatory microtransaction model Force-chokes Battlefront II’s experience. It’s a shame to see a game with such clear greatness get pulled down to these depths. Star Wars deserves better. We deserve better.
Shacknews - 6/10

Star Wars: Battlefront II is a pretty good game and you’re going to get it if you’re a fan of Star Wars, no matter what anyone says. I’m just thankful that the game is an improvement over the first attempt and is incredibly fun solo, or with friends online. The loot crates diminish its value greatly, and it’s a shame EA forces them down your throat as part of the core gameplay, but the game looks gorgeous and is enjoyable to play.
The Telegraph - 3/5

A mostly good adventure, then, but not without some major foibles. There’s no doubt Battlefront 2 is better than its predecessor but we do miss some the latter’s purity – guns, for example, still feel excellent to fire, but there’s so many of them now that you feel like you’re in Call of Duty shooter territory. Amidst a forcible loot system it creates a slight sense of soullessness that could see DICE’s latest effort risks fading into the background as another decent shooter that misses its mark.
Trusted Reviews - 3/5

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is a great game spoiled by a terrible business model. DICE and EA are going to be under a huge amount of pressure not just to tweak, but completely overhaul the metagame or face an even bigger fan backlash than they have already.

Underneath the terrible progression system, cheap payouts and more-than-gentle hand in the back towards paying for loot crates is the same excellent core, now across so much more content with the promise of more free maps and heroes to come.

EA Caves in and Changes Star Wars Battlefront II Character Costs
Nov 13, 2017 - 3:22 PM - by Evil Avatar

PC Gamer has the news that after a massive backlash, Electronic Arts has decided to reduce the number of credits required to unlock hero characters in Star Wars Battlefront II by 75%.

In response to the massive backlash against the cost of hero characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in Star Wars Battlefront 2—this EA reply to complaints on Reddit has earned 450,000 downvotes in just one day, making it the most-downvoted Reddit post of all time—Electronic Arts has announced that the amount of credits required to unlock the "top heroes" will be reduced by 75 percent.

"Making games great comes from regular tuning. As one example, today we’re making a substantial change based on what we’ve seen during the Play First trial," executive producer John Wasilczyk wrote. "There’s been a lot of discussion around the amount of in-game credits (and time) it takes to unlock some of our heroes, especially Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Unlocking a hero is a great accomplishment in the game, something we want players to have fun earning. We used data from the beta to help set those levels, but it’s clear that more changes were needed."

The reduction means that Luke and Darth, for instance, will cost 15,000 credits instead of the previously-announced 60,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbecca, and Princess Leia will go for 10,000; and Iden Versio, the star of the Battlefront 2 campaign, will be 5000.

Wolfenstein 2 DLC Release Dates Revealed
Nov 13, 2017 - 12:50 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Bethesda has revealed more details about the upcoming DLC packs for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. The publisher announced its DLC plans for the game this past summer, and now it has confirmed when each of the expansions is scheduled to release.

As previously detailed, The Freedom Chronicles season pass consists of four DLC expansions for Wolfenstein II, the first of which--Episode Zero--is available now for players who pre-ordered the title or purchased the season pass. It will be followed on December 14 by The Adventures of Gunslinger Joe, a new mission that stars former quarterback Joseph Stallion as he "smash[es] through Nazi hordes from the ruins of Chicago to the vastness of space."

The third DLC expansion arrives a month later, on January 30, and is called The Diaries of Agent Silent Death. It puts players in the role of ex-OSS agent Jessica Valiant and has them "infiltrate Nazi bunkers in California and discover the secrets of Operation San Andreas." The final expansion, The Deeds of Captain Wilkins, launches in March and tasks players with dismantling a Nazi operation in Alaska.

The Freedom Chronicles season pass costs US $25 / £18 / AU $35 and includes all of the aforementioned DLC packs. Players can also purchase each of the expansions individually, though Bethesda has yet to announce pricing details for them.

EA could one day stop releasing a new FIFA, Madden every year
Nov 11, 2017 - 1:22 PM - by Emabulator

VG247 has the story.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that online subscriptions could be the future of annual boxed releases of sports games like FIFA, and Madden NFL.

According to Wilson, as the industry moves more towards the games-as-a-service model and consumers rely more and more on digital downloads, this transition will become easier. Speaking to Bllomberg, Wilson gave the example Madden’s mobile title, which released three years ago and only received big updates every season.

With that in mind, the CEO is aware that there’s a challenge in translating a model that works great on mobile to a console game. “When we design a game that lives in a true streaming world, we have to think about screen size and session time,” said Wilson.

“How does a Madden game that exists in the cloud manifest on your mobile phone, one minute at a time? How does that manifest on your 60-inch TV, an hour at a time.”

PUBG Style Battle Royale is Coming to Crytek's Futuristic Shooter Warface
Nov 11, 2017 - 12:33 PM - by Emabulator

PC Gamer has the story.

Crytek are looking to capitalise on the battle royale explosion by adding the mode to their futuristic free-to-play shooter Warface. It's coming in the next update (no date is given), and it will hang around temporarily to allow the developer to gather feedback, tinker with the formula, and then reintroduce the final package later on.

Expect a large desert map and a ever-shrinking play zone with random loot—basically, it's the formula that PUBG proved grabs players and doesn't let them go. Crytek says that the map is the largest ever in the game, but from the looks of early footage (some international versions of the game already have the mode added) it only supports 16 players. Rather than parachute in, players are randomly spawned across the map.

Humvee Makers Sue Activision Over Vehicles In Call Of Duty
Nov 10, 2017 - 5:53 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

AM General, the manufacturer of the well known Humvee military vehicles, has filed lawsuit against Activision for extensive use of Humvees in Call of Duty over the years.

The lawsuit alleges that Activision have taken advantage of AM General's "goodwill and reputation" by incorporating Humvee branding into the games and related toys and content. AM also alleges that the vehicles are a key selling point to the series. Activision have stated that they do not comment on pending litigation.

Humvee and HMMWV are short for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, used by the military for its highly resistant construction. AM General says they have produced nearly 278,000 Humvees as manufacturer. What The company also said it wants compensatory, punitive and triple damages from Activision after the months of talks have failed.

We spoke with IP litigator Nathan Sabri of Morrison & Foerster about the case's viability.

"You're usually fine to use a real toy or name if it's part of a plot of your movie," Sabri said. "What I think [AM General is] getting at is, if the Humvees are background use, then AM General doesn't have a case and I think they know that. What AM General needs to prove is that Call of Duty is being misleading about the source and makes people think it's sponsored or licensed."

Capcom Confirms New Switch Games in the Works, Including an Ace Attorney
Nov 10, 2017 - 5:38 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

Capcom is already developing new games to release on Nintendo Switch in fiscal year 2018, Capcom COO Haruhiro Tsujiro has confirmed - and one of those is an Ace Attorney game.

The news comes via an interview by Japanese news website Jiji, as translated by Wall Street Journal tech reporter Takashi Mochizuki.

It's not exactly surprising to hear that Capcom has new games in the works for Switch, of course - particularly given the console's greater-than-anticipated sales success - but the news is likely to be of comfort to fans dismayed by the company's seemingly cautious approach to Switch during its launch year.

So far, Capcom has released one game on Switch in the west - the disappointing, questionably priced Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers. The company's HD 3DS port Monster Hunter XX, meanwhile, has remained Japan-only, much to the chagrin of on-the-go Monster Hunter fans over here.

The only other Capcom game confirmed to release on Switch up until today's news has been its port of Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2, due later this month.

Rian Johnson, Writer-Director of The Last Jedi, To Create All-New Star Wars Trilogy
Nov 10, 2017 - 1:33 PM - by Emabulator

Lucasfilm has announced that Rian Johnson, the writer and director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has been tapped to create an all-new Star Wars trilogy.

For director Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi was just the beginning of his journey in a galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.
As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in U.S. theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.

No release dates have been set for the new films, and no porgs were available for comment.

Need for Speed Payback Reviews "banal racing" "focus on grinding" "disappointing"
Nov 10, 2017 - 12:53 PM - by Emabulator

GamesRadar+ - 3.5/5

Need for Speed Payback successfully returns to its Fast and Furious roots with aplomb, but a focus on the grind and a beautiful but empty world means it ultimately falls short of greatness.
Forbes - 6.5/10

One one hand, NFSP feels a lot like a film from a major movie studio with b-level actors, a bad script and talented cinematographers who were perhaps uninspired. On the other side, there is some fun, but simplistic quality to the gameplay. However, it is predominantly a game that is trying to do too many things at once. Unfortunately, it fails to stand out in any one area. Had it ditched the open-world concept for a more challenge and stage-based experience, the story would have been easier to follow and perhaps more engaging. Also, the game might have been able to focus more on its best attribute, which is pure, dumb racing.
Shacknews - 6/10

In an effort to adopt the stylings of other popular, open-world racers, Need For Speed: Payback presents some fun ideas with poor execution. It also misses an opportunity to elevate an NFS staple with a tacked-on, linear version of Pursuit that annoys while simultaneously reminding me of the absence of a Burnout game on the market. Payback could have solidified the NFS franchise’s spot in the market with the new heist missions and stood out from open-world racers with cop pursuit but, instead, gave us bright moments set in a bland world with technical shortcomings.
USgamer - 3/5

Need for Speed returns with another flawed entry. There's the core of a great racing game here and when you're just driving around the open world, it's wonderful. The progression system encourages grinding and the basic story is delivered with B-movie seriousness, taking away from the racing pleasure. There's a better game inside of Payback, but you have to go through everything else to get to it.
GameSpot - 5/10

Need for Speed Payback's banal racing is only magnified by this focus on grinding. The simple, almost retro, handling model provides occasional bouts of fun, but it's never enough to escape Payback's flaws, with an unwillingness to let you partake in its most hair-raising moments, and a general drabness that seeps into every layer of the game. Fast and Furious, this is not; and that's a disappointing outcome.

EA Kills... Um... "Acquires" Respawn Entertainment
Nov 10, 2017 - 8:44 AM - by Evil Avatar

In a move sure to spell the death march for Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment, they have announced that they have sold out to publisher Electronic Arts.

EA to Acquire Respawn Entertainment

Electronic Arts announced today an agreement to acquire Respawn Entertainment, a leading independent game development studio and creators of AAA shooter and action games including the critically-acclaimed Titanfall franchise. Respawn brings to EA the proven leadership and studio talent behind Titanfall and Titanfall 2, two of the most highly-rated shooter titles in the last five years. The acquisition builds on a successful publishing partnership between Respawn and EA, with multiple projects currently in development - a new title in the Titanfall franchise, a game set in the Star Wars universe and a VR gaming experience.

"We've seen firsthand the world-class caliber of Respawn as a development studio with incredible vision, deep talent and an inspiring creative mindset," said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts. "Our longtime partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world. Together, we've brought this to life in the Titanfall franchise, and now with the Respawn team joining EA, we have exciting plans to accomplish even more amazing things in the future."

"We started Respawn with the goal to create a studio with some of the best talent in the industry, and to be a top developer of innovative games," said Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment. "We felt that now was the time to join an industry leader that brings the resources and support we need for long term success, while still keeping our culture and creative freedom. EA has been a great partner over the years with Titanfall and Titanfall 2, and we're excited to combine our strengths. This is a great next step for Respawn, EA, and our players."

Respawn is the creator and developer of the critically-acclaimed Titanfall franchise that energized the first-person shooter genre with its innovative gameplay. The first game, Titanfall, was published by EA in 2014, and received global recognition with more than 75 top awards. Fans and critics fell in love with the game's refreshing, fast-paced multiplayer gameplay. Respawn and EA launched Titanfall 2 in late 2016, with a new single-player campaign and expanded multiplayer gameplay, resulting in one of the year's top-rated shooters.

Respawn will join EA's Worldwide Studios organization, a global creative collective of leading game development studios bringing to life an unmatched portfolio of top games and services across all major platforms.

Under the agreement, EA will pay $151 million in cash, and up to $164 million in long-term equity in the form of restricted stock units to employees, which will vest over four years. In addition, EA may be required to pay additional variable cash consideration that is contingent upon achievement of certain performance milestones, relating to the development of future titles, through the end of calendar 2022. The additional consideration is limited to a maximum of $140 million. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the calendar 2017 or soon thereafter, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The acquisition is expected to be neutral to EA's net income in fiscal years 2018 and 2019.
I'm already predicting that we will hear about the founder Vince departing next year, then the slow death march for the rest of the company. First cranking out a few Star Wars sequels, then getting assigned to DLC for some other branch of EA... then closure.

GameSpot has the story.

Destiny 2 is getting updated to take advantage of the power of the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro, developer Bungie announced today. Bungie will update both games to support the new consoles on December 5, which is the day that Destiny 2's Curse of Osiris expansion launches. December 5 is also the start-date of Destiny 2 Season Two.

Bungie's blog post announcing the updates does not go into a lot of detail about what players can expect in terms of upgrades or enhancements on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, only to say you'll see "stunning gameplay with high dynamic range lighting." Additionally, there will be "adaptive 4K resolution" on PS4 Pro and regular 4K on Xbox One X.

"If you're migrating to these new consoles, or already have, we'll make it worth your investment," Bungie said.

Grand Theft Auto V is the Best-Selling Game of All Time in the US
Nov 08, 2017 - 2:21 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

Another day, another Grand Theft Auto 5 sales milestone. But this one's a biggie: GTA5 is now the best-selling game of all time in the US.

Rockstar's open world has sold more copies and earned more money from sales than any other game, ever, across the pond.

Parent company Take-Two reported another strong set of financial results today, on the back of GTA5's success.

Next year, Take-Two will oversee the launch of both Rockstar's next big open world game Red Dead Redemption 2 and "a highly anticipated new title from one of 2K's biggest franchises" (AKA Borderlands 3).

In an echo of Ubisoft's comments from its overnight financial call, Take-Two was also celebrating what is called "recurrent consumer spending", in other words, "virtual currency, add-on content and microtransactions".
